It is fascinating that Jaffer is loaded with talent and he was toiling in domestic cricket. He is technically sound have all the requirements of a good opener.I have not seen batsmen of his calibre opening for India in recent past. His grinding in domestic has bore fruit and selectors should understand his immense potential and persist with him for few series and he will prove his credential time and again. He will serve the team like a true warrior.

Jaffer's record

The last stat re: double tons by openers against WI is very revealing. After 1971, when the WI fast bowling legends ruled the world, only 2 200s were scored against them till 1996-97 and both in 70's.

Not one double ton in the entire eighties and most of 90's even while there were still some of the finest fast bowlers ever to have played represented WI.

Gavaskar was one of the only 2 to score a 200 against such an attack- though it was when the best WI players were with Packer.

Setting the record straight

In your second table in the "Jaffer in record books" article, it is mentiuoned that Sunil Gavaskar has hit two double centuries against West Indies: 220 at Port of Spain and 205 at Mumbai.

Just to set the record straight, he scored three double hundreds against the West Indies. The third was the epic 236 not out at Chennai (then Madras) in the sixth test of the 1983-84 series.

this is the third comment on this post: away from subcontinent. Sehwag's triple century was in Pakistan which as of today is in subcontinent.
