Rahul Dravid is a proven liability in ODIs. He does not know to rotate the strike by taking singles nor does he know to settle down fast. He goes on consuming over after over quite blissfully unmindful of the overs required for scoring the required runs at least by the others. He increases the asking rate and finally gets out. And the very runs he scored would be of no use as the asking rate would have gone beyond any reasonable standard. His slow, ineffective batting in ODIs is not only unproductive, but also it is infectious in that it affects the batsman at the other end too. He does not deserve a selection for ODIs in the first place. He no doubt is a class test player. But then, he is as dispensable to One Day Matches as he is indispensable to Test matches. He demonstrated this time and again, but there is no one to take note of this.
Why such a question be raised at all ? The comparative statistics between Dravid and Ganguly after 2003 World Cup is relevant. Ganguly had his innings. How many low scores by him as a batsman people want to see and how many defeats in the final as a captain Ganguly wants experience. Let Ganguly close his innings gracefully !! Surely, Dravid is the right choice.
What can you say of a man, who stops his team mate ( Tendulkar) from scoring a double century by declaring the innings and that too in a game which everybody knew was heading for an obvious draw, except that atleast he is a man who cannot rise above petty politics and hence should never be considered for Captaincy.
Both Rahul and Sourav are at the fag end of their careers. Sourav's success is history now. There's absolutely no point in prolonging him by singing praises of his past. The first step that has to be taken boldy and wisely is to replace Sourav as Captain whose performance and fitness, both are in question. Rahul is the only Senior guy who is still performing and maintaining his fitness. Making him captain would be wisest stop gap arrangement before a younger player could prove himself and knock at the doors of captaincy.
Dravid doesn't have the aggressive ability like Ganguly to be a successful captain. The reason behind Ganguly being replaced after India's first successful overseas victory in over 20 years seems to be definitely other than performance. Also Dravid has been in the greatest of form lately (Check out the ICC Super Series).
rahul dravid is a good batsman but a poor captain, he is too laid back and does not seek initiative, rather waits for it to happen. ideal choice would have been sachin when ganguly was replaced.
