Severe Punishment Needed
by S. Anand on Nov 22, 2005 11:49 AM

If the payer has admitted to damaging the pitch and if there is sufficient evidence, then it is not sufficient to ban him for a couple of matches. A worse punishment like awarding the match to the opposition must be given. That will teach people not to tamper with the ball or pitch and will also teach captains to be more responsible and take care that none of their players violate any law. Pakistan has been playing extremely well in the series and looks to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Yet a senior and a champion player like Afridi is caught in such an undesirable act. A more sever punishment than a 2 match ban (particularly, awarding the match to England) will teach a lesson to all players in the world that an indiscreet act from them could cost their team heavily. Players will then learn that tampering with the pitch or the ball is not the way to go about things. Similar punishment must be meted out to other indisciplined behavior. Aggression is alright but there must be strict rules to enforce discipline on the field. There is no excuse for deliberate damage of the ball or the pitch.
