C.N. Shankar
Narrow minded Broad
by C.N. Shankar on Mar 14, 2005 05:02 AM

As an INDIAN I suppose I will never understand the way these Match Referees conduct themselves. Is Mr. Broad a Narrow minded person? Balaji has no way of 'defending' himself. There may be a provision for "appealing" etc. But the way things are conducted any 'PLAYER' has only one option - to plead guilty and hope to get away with the least punishment.

This case is said to be based on ALL 3 Umpires complaining. Where does the THIRD Umpire figure in this issue? Did Balaji appeal when the ball was 'neatly' despatched to the BOUNDARY? Or did he appeal when he thought the Batsman could be LBW?

For the information of the Match Referee the same 'Rule Book' says the Umpire will give out only base on an APPEAL. In other words if the Batsman has 'nicked' and the Umpire feels he is caught he need not give him OUT UNLESS some one, even from third man's position appeals! My verdict is - Bowler is Right.

Indian Fined

It is the starting of fines being imposed by the ICC on Indian team. Happy days are here again as ICC loves imposing fine on indian team. Even if they sneeze, ICC will find it against the code of conduct. Happy earning ICC.

Thank God Mongia wasnt the keeper!!!

Well this is a welcome decision by the match officials..Excessive appealing is like "Swearing" in Football which puts pressure on the Match Officials..This will put a lid on the bowlers in the matches to come.

Nayan Mongia would have lost his life's earnings if this was strictly applied in his days.

Balaji fined by match referee

so nothing has changed then. Players from the sub-continent are still required to behave as flanned-attired posh toffs. When was the last time a caucasian player was fined for excessive appealing? seems like south-africa all over again. we have to abide by the code of conduct while players of a different skin can do as they please. this whole episode reeks of a colonial hangover and dare i say it--racist prejudice.
for all those people suggesting India's growing power at the ICC (M.Atherton for one) kindly shut up. The Indian board may be the richest but the sub-continent still isn't the centre of world cricket. If it was players from the sub-continent wouldn't be fined like this and players from other countries (read white) wouldn't be let off so easily (Glenn Mcgrath being the best example).
