My heartfest condolences to the bereaved family of Eknath Solker. May the departed soul rest in peace.

Yet another unassuming and sincere player has left this mad mad world out to do anything for the sake of vitamin 'M'.

Solkar a hero
by Samir Kelekar on Jun 26, 2005 07:53 PM

Those of us who remember the Indian cricketing scene of the 70's (in fact, to me personally it was an important part of growing up) will not forget the "man of crisis" Eknath Solkar. India : 50 for 5 --- time and again the score would read like above. And Solkar would walk in. As wickets would fall at the other end, Solkar would stick on. Nothing would deter him;
eternal patience and perseverence was his hallmark.
The opponents could try whatever. He would take the score to say a respectable 150 and give enough runs for the spinners to bowl. Solkar would then do the incredible with his fielding : full-length diving catches of the bowling of Chandrasekhar used to be the building blocks of India's victory. In times when there was no TV to replay these heroic moments, newspaper cuttings of pictures were the only thing kids like me could treasure. People like Solkar, Chandrasekhar, Wadekar built the self-esteem of Indian cricket and showed possibilities to a country enslaved by the past of colonialism that they could win against the Western countries.

Solkar's heroics will not be forgotten. It is my humble prayer wishing Solkar's soul eternal peace.

ES - RIP!!!
by Rohan on Jun 26, 2005 07:20 PM

Probably the most enigmatic of them all with lightening-quick reflexes. He's brought to cricket, a certain degree of flair and excitement which was later to be emulated by the likes of Jonty Rhodes, Ricky Ponting, etc. When cricket's history will be mapped, Solkar will surely be credited as short-leg's bravest fielder.

Play ball with the Gods, Eknath!

SOLKAR DEATH
by kannan on Jun 26, 2005 07:17 PM

Solkar is an all time great.No one can replicate his close field catches.Unfortunately this self effacing gentleman cricketer did not get his full due in cricket history.

A great loss for classical cricket enthusiasts.

Brave cricketer Catch out

Eknatha solkar was a great Indian bowler and he would be remembered as good cricketer as well as a man with great values. His extra ordinarily taken cathes will be an inspiration for young cricketers.
