First of all was ODI a part of cricket before?? Only test matches were played right?? If people are able to accept ODI as a one of the type of cricket played, why can't you accept the changes brought to it??
What one forgets to observe in this powerplay rule is, "It is mandatory only in the first 10 overs" and next two set of 5 overs is at captain's discretion.
Imagine a situation, more often than not in subcontinents, where in the batsmen score 70-80 runs in the first 10 overs. Do the bowlers have to go thru the next five overs like that. That would definitely boost the batting teams score. By defering the powerplay to a later stage might even reduce the final score.
You people forget to see this because the captains of both sides used it in first 20 overs. As well, the scoring rates weren't high at that time.
This article is good, but i somehow dont agree fully on what has been said. I agree that people like to see Tailenders trying to put up some fight in front of great bowlers, but thats one aspect of it. The powerplay is a good rule as it makes the game exciting during 25-40 overs time.
Imagine, Yuvraj singh in that position. Wont he love to have open spaces to free his hands. No problems with this rule. But i am a lill skepticle about Super Sub rule.
Well to the utter disappointment, The person who is incharge of making these rules, is a deserter himself. Mr. Sunil Gavaskar, one who instead of helping team INDIA is trying to make the game more interesting. Well, to me he is one of the most boring players in the cricket history.
Remove Sunil Gavaskar and things will automatically improve....
Exellent Article Saurabh! I completly agree with you :Rules like Powerplay and Supersub suck! The previous laws should be reinstalled to make the game fairer. Also the board should not try to make cricket a batsmen oriented game( as it is it's a batsmen oriented game).
A very well written piece. I also think that the new rules are not exciting. The sight of Brett Lee bowling to Gough or Giles is still something that I wud prefer to over the batsman friendly rules that have come into existence!
Already the Indian pitches favor the batsman so much that this was not needed at all.
The writer needs to make his mind up whether watching One day game at Lord's is boring or not. At the start of the article it is most boring place to watch cricket for him but then at the end he starts liking it and says that he has enjoyed every game he has watched over there!! What kind of nonsense is this!!
Powerplay is yuck in the beginning but then we have to be fair and say that Powerplay adds little bit of excitement and drama to the game! Duh!! That's precisely what the ICC wanted. They wanted to add some excitement and drama to the 25 to 40 over yawn period in an ODI.
And what's up with the obsession with McGrath trying to win the game for Australia with 6 balls remaining and 4 runs to get? Such scenarios will happen once in a blue moon and what's the harm if Australia have a better batsmen than McGrath to win yet another game for Australia.
