Left Support for Left Handed Cricketer is not Right
by Kunal Mukherjee on Dec 16, 2005 06:38 PM

So now after failing to stem the momentum of economic measures unleashed by Chidambaram to benefit the top 1% of our citizens, the Left has found a new agenda for their short-lived protests. It has suddenly acquired the expertise to analyse the selection of our cricket team! They would be better advised to concentrate on what should be of primary focus for them : speaking up for the poor, the dispossessed and the powerless millions in our country who do not get even one square meal a day.

There is no need to curry favour with the lunatic fringe in Calcutta who recently supported Sri Lanka in the one day match against their own country's team. I thought this was something which only the misguided people of Kashmir used to do when they supported Pakistan against India during one-dayers in Srinagar in the past.

We do not have to be grateful or sad at the forced or unforced retirement of any cricketer who is given the opportunity to don Indian colours. For given this opportunity, the cricketer earns obscene amounts from the BCCI and endorsements in a very short span of time. Sourav's performance was meagre and he has to go. That's that. Welcome Wasim Jaffer.

Will you support a non-Bengali player?
by Mohan on Dec 16, 2005 05:59 PM

Dear Left,

All of a sudden..for the first time...a political party (which dominates the politics in West bengal from where Ganguly hails) has come into picture in open support of a sportsperson.

How many times did this party come in support of other cricketers or, for that matter, any other sportsperson.

Why didn't these political parties did not speak a word when Ganguly spoke to the media irresponsibly?

Now, the party also says that it is not politicising this issue? If you are not "politicising" then is there any other better word for this in English ?
