Hi prem,

India must win this match to show the incredibility of Team INDIA.

the score would be around 235-240 , but the chance to win for pak team is still not more than 40% , india need the quick wickets of upper order....

Defending.. Ganguly..
by baskar on Apr 14, 2005 11:44 PM

Well.. I see lots and lots of messages critisizing Ganguly's efforts. I appriciate all the facts in your messages. But to pin point, what the other guys were doing?? I mean the senior players.. or the so called cricketing brains... to name a few.. sachin, dravid, sehwag (tagged as future captain).. or the bowlers..
well.. I agree the final field setting is in the hands of Captain.. fine.. but are they not allowed to make suggestions???!! or two or three together to force the captain to change the field settings??? i really don't know the mood prevailing on other writers.. I feel, Ganguly is not the only one to be blamed..Well.. Ganguly came ahead of Yuvi, dravid & kaif... but let me tell you.. there was a phase when slower bowlers were terrified at the sight of Ganguly, the ease with which he sails the ball into the stands directly from his bat.. well.. i agree that he took little too much balls to get the runs at the crucial phase of the innings.. but remember, two sixes would have settled the whole issue.. we all know, he is out of form.. this is the time all fans & media should support him.. not booing.. on Ganguly's part he should realize he is blocking another young player

Voice recognition software

Hi Prem

It is really commendable what you are doing. But why can't you make use of some technology. There might be some software out there that can translate your voice into words - may not work very well but better than forcing yourself into typing all that you type.

PRE'S POST

It is amazing how a few people revel in Ganguly bashing! Some of the comments are low in taste and display unbearable immaturity. Ganguly as captain is the best thing that happened to Indian cricket for plenty of reasons. He has been one of the top ODI player the game has produced. Of course his form in ODI [still quite acceptable in tests] has been a concern. But, even worse than that, his unimaginative filed placements in the First test and the 4th ODI allowed Pakistan to draw the test and win the ODI. If he has to be dropped for the ODIs based on poor form which reflects on his captaincy, fair enough. But then, in the last 15 ODIs [prior to the 4th ODI] the performance of Sachin,Yuvraj & Kaif [excluding performance against BD&Kenya for all] were even worse than Ganguly.. Why there was no feverish call for dropping these two players? Such over the top criticism of the Captain is disgraceful and will not help either him or the team. The fact remains that quite a few of our players are completely over valued and hyped up and do not match the quality of the opponents. Just as the team was over dependent on Sachin in the last decade, it is now over dependent on Sehwag and Dravid.

need changes.
by sumit on Apr 14, 2005 02:39 PM

dear prem,
first of all i would like to appreciate your commentary and the amount of hard work u put in,hats off to u,now i have certain queries:-
1)when everyone in india who has simple knowledge about cricket, knows what is going right and what is going wrong, why the hell the selectors or coaches or captain can never understand, this has been happening for yers in indian cricket and which is really hard to digest.2)after seeing the game for so many years i have come to a conclusion that changes for betterment in indian cricket is far too slow as compared to australia or some other teams where the people are much more professinals, even players like dean jonse, mark waugh, david boon, steven waugh were compelled to leave the team when they started to show decline ,why is so in india that we always live on past performance, like for example: vvslaxman ne 281 run baneye the na to usko kaise nikalsakte hai,woh phir se run baneaga, why is this consideration in indian cricket that is player ne us samay aaisa perform kiya THA,cmmon we have to live in present not in past and i think we need to follow the australians.
is it possible to boycott matches as a protesti.e no viewers in stadiums.

Saurav should be rested
by Sanjoy Banerjee on Apr 14, 2005 02:30 PM

Saurav should not be rested for his batting form or lack of it, or for his sudden loss of leadership skills - he should be rested simply because he is upsetting the balance of the team. At present the team has 6 batsmen, Sehwag,Sachin,Dravid,Yuvraj,Kaif and Dhoni, and only four regular bowlers - Nehra, Zaheer, Balaji and a spinner whoever that might be. The last position should either be filled in by a bowling all rounder or simply a bowler. We have not been bowling too well - the 'fifth' bowler is going for too many and the 'fourth' bowler is living dangerously without a backup. When he starts to go for a few, we lose the match even before we begin to chase or half way through our defending ever the biggest of totals...Prem, what do you feel?

Comments on 4th ODI - for Prem Panicker
by Swapnil Shah on Apr 14, 2005 01:05 PM

Sachin Tendulkar's penchant with having the sightscreen absolutely right is well-known. And we've seen him get out after distractions due to the sight screen. A point that Ravi shastri made about this was notable. He said that Sachin should go to the middle 15 minutes before every match, take guard and sort out any problems that he has with the sighscreen. That way, he can save time from being wasted during the match. Already our beleagured captain, is playing most of his games for free. He should be allowed to make the most money from the last few games that he plays before a form-induced forced exile from all cricket !!

Man, does Dhoni give the ball a whack !! Some of his shots on the off side were truly 'thumping'.

Sachin & the Wisden episode
You must read the amount of material posted on the CricketNext.com website on this issue. It's amazing. Are this people real journalists? As Sambit Bal (on Cricinfo), rightly pointed out, - 'The Wisden pen-sketch was merely an observation on the way he batted in 2004'.

Comments on 4th ODI - for Prem Panicker
by Swapnil Shah on Apr 14, 2005 01:03 PM

Hi Prem,

I was up all night (10 pm - 6 am local) watching the match. I can't help but wonder why Murali was doing the job that Yuvraj or Sachin could have done. What is the role of a specialist spinner in the team? No one except Razzaq looked like picking up a wicket !!

However, rather than criticism which is falling on deaf ears, I chose to enjoy the GAME. I had given up after the runs-balls differential dropped to 10. They did kind of make a match of it. And Nehra - the least athletic fielder - made it a look like he had golden arm. If only he could have done more when he was bowling (the dropped catches sure didn't help) !!

There was something that I noticed which was funny. When Sehwag came out as runner for Sachin, ironically after he himself was lazily runout, he was practicing his favorite shot, upper cut to third man !!

Being a big Indian fan, I have hated many of former Pakistani players. But I must say that Inzy is one of the most soft-spoken and genuine cricketers that Pakistan has produced. I, actually, felt sorry for him when he comes to speak after his team's defeats.

(contd...)
