Of course field placement is very very important. What I do not understand is how can a coach and captain not get it right even after so many years of experience, of playing so many matches, of facing same situations! I would suggest a minimum of 5 fielders saving singles. If bowlers are disciplined then 4 fielders outside would be sufficient. If the batsmen takes chances to overcome this then that should be welcome.

Single Cause for Defeat

Dear Ashish,
You do not have to analyze in that detail. ( though I did like the analysis)

It is very simple. Make the worst runner between the wickets ( Ganguly) the captain of the team and retain the second worst runner VVS just because he is talented and only delivers once in a blue moon. As if these two are not enough, Veeru is getting into this don't run habit as well.

Even that is too much detail. Just say that 'Sachin can not win matches' Isn't that very simple/
Thanks

I found this analysis to be the best that I've read recently. I like rediff coz it's a no-nonsense site
where you get quality articles like this unlike Times of india site where surprisingly it's only junk/rumour/on the front page !

I only hope Indian team reads such article and bring some sanity to their basics. Ganguly is getting pathetic by the day and he's turning out to be a completely useless captain or a worser batsmen (if he claims to be one).

I really love reading your analysys Ashish! But let me just tell you that there are people who feel that the outcome of the series is decided long before it started. The way India could not get the last 4 bastmen out in the first test match, let alone getting out, but could not even beat them for a ball showed it all. Similarly in Bangalore the way team approached on the last day (mind you I am not saying the way team batted) said it all. As if they are playing to loose the match not to win or save it. Similarly in ODIs also, the last ODI had so many occassion when one felt that this is a match whose outcome was decided months back. Just to mention one point "What happened to Sehwag after bowling the over which was perhaps the lowest scoring over of the innings?". I can give more examples but I am not interested in wasting much of my valuable time.

So dear friends - The outcome of the series is going to be nothing but, 3 all. Use your precious time in watching something else, which is more fun and just true fun....

Think a bit before speaking on a sensitive issue. Now result of the series is in front of you. What would you say, I think nothing. But i have to say - WRONG and ILL MENTALITY

No point discussing

Cricketers would be successful if we think we know better cricket than cricketers themselves.

If you see
> Ganguly allowed his bowlers to take their own time for a losing cause
> Inzamam left the match open till the last delivery
> Ganguly promoted himself in batting line-up above in-form Dravid
> Indian score in 4th one-day, despite Pakistan having only 3 specialist bowlers
> Sehwag was given only one over and then taken off

I understand only one thing, everybody with-in the teams know what would be the result of the match.

In a game where there is so much money, so much of betting going on. How can we believe that there is no influence of underworld (mafia)?

Singling out

Weldone Ashish, good work so far. But i am partially agree with your statics.Regarding fourth ODI, India single run was marginally lesser but the credit goes to our low morale captain. The score 315 can be defend on any pitch in any situation and against any team including the world champion. If you recall the fielding setting between 15 and 35 overs, one can easily tell how faulty was the strategy. Was not that completly defensive or u can say sucidal. Why attempts not being made to stop those 125 singles. And no need to tell the role of Indian outwent captain. Whole the Indian team did well except captancy. If we can not attack a team even with the 315 runs on the board, then no use of giving these heavy statistical data. 6-7 singles every over and match was out of reach. Just like we did in third test match, this the mere repition of the thing. reason is obvious, low confidence captain, low level thinking and over defensive approach and which certainly affect the climax. Failure with batting, and overdefensive approach to defend a rock like big total are the reason. Pakistan played well, but above that captaincy was too bad even not upto a club level team.

Nice analysis
by Adi on Apr 13, 2005 08:56 PM

It's a very good analysis. Rather than saying we didn't bowl well or gave away too many runs, we should always look at why it happened. The root cause analysis is always the ebst way to attack a problem. Even though it's mostly coaches' responsibility, it would tremendously help the Indians if the captain comes up with some ideas after having done this kind of analysis with the coah, especially since he is not having a good time with the bat. Once again, good article and to the point.

toss the game aside
by chakravarthy on Apr 13, 2005 08:44 PM

one would wonder if the spectators have been given the ride of their life in ahmedabad...the game was as good as over by the time the 35th over was bowled. but perhaps just to prove that its a game of certainity the pakistani batsmen ran themselves out when there was no necessity to do so and lo and behold the spectators were pra(e)ying for an indian victory(one could see the sms polls showing possibility of either side winning). and the last over farce that was played was the final nail. no i am not talking of match fixing.i am talking of the kind of needless tomfoolery that was going on in ahmedabad. perhaps the generation needs an overdose of adrelinaine pumping scenario so as to satiate their never ending quest for getting a high...perhaps marx would have replaced the word religion with sport if he were around. while the captains talk of toss being important..its perhaps more important to toss the game aside.

a very good calculation
by Sunil Tyagi on Apr 13, 2005 07:07 PM

Well i read your calculation about the runs scored by India. I pray to god that this column should be read by the upcoming Captain Rahul Dravid or Virender Sehwag or the Coach Mr. John Wright or any other responsible person of Indian Team so that they can give the match winning performance.

Thanks

Sunil Tyagi
