We wish the former India stumper all the very best in his new responsibilities as chief selector of Team India. When he was a school boy in Baroda we marvelled at the enormous energy he displayed as a player and motivator of fellow youngsters in the inter school tourneys of the Baroda District. Later as wicket keeper of the state and National Team he carried on with tremendous enthusiasm and commitment. Now as chief selector we know he will bring forth his rich experience for the good cause of Team India.
This is as ridiculous as it gets. A selector censured by the Cricket board just a while ago for keeping quiet even after, on his own admission, being offered a bribe by a player, gets to be named the Chief Selector of the Indian team immediately afterwards.
Kiran More has just about come off the headlines he made for the wrong reasons: questions have been raised by all concerned on why he kept quiet after allegedly being offered a bribe by Maharashtra-based Abhijeet Kale. More has come up with no satisfactory explanations, at least in public.
Yet, he has been named the Chief Selector of the Indian national cricket team. This just shows how much the powers-that-be care about the followers and lovers of the game, and their right to have their team selected by people who are above all doubts with regard to either their ability or, as in this case, their ethics.
Small wonder, then, that marginal selection decisions are always looked upon with suspicion by the game's followers.
And don't be surprised if this suspicion turns into a dislike for the game itself: the game to which the people commit so much love, but are rewarded with such supreme neglect of their concerns.
It is time we get rid of this Selection Committee having Zonal representatives. What was the contribution people like Pranab Roy have made to Indian cricket to be included as Selectors? Shame!
