Shame on BCCI and the Government
by Balaji JV on Sep 07, 2004 11:18 PM

Its an irony that while the BCCI is earning mountains of cash and cricket getting all the ill deserved spotlight, other sports in the country are being ignored to an abysmal level and desperately need funding in order to survive leave alone prosper. Its such a shame for the country and Indians as a whole, considering our performance in the Olympics and other international sport. The Government should take control of the BCCI and see to that a significant portion of the money earned from cricket is used for the development of other sports in the country particularly Athletics, Hockey and Football. It is a sad reflection of the state of affairs that while a bunch of cricketers are turning into billionaires from already being millionaires, key achievers in other sporting disciplines are fighting for their daily survival.

2 sides to the same coin

To me, ESPN-STAR with their world class facilities should be awarded the deal. They provide a really professional outlook to an otherwise boring sport.

On the other hand, if the contract was ( or will be ) awarded to ESPN-STAR it would mean an increase in the cable subscription rates from the current figure of Rs.50/- (per household) to something which may be exorbidant.

Can ZEE start showing more of Formula 1 :-))

Kill Cricket
Is it really worth?
by Kill Cricket on Sep 07, 2004 02:12 AM

We fools in the subcontinent are so obsessed with this colonial game that we forget the cost it makes us all to pay. The amount of money involved in this "gentlemens-game" sometimes makes me feel really pitty for those poor people who in the name of entertainment get attracted to this not-so-cheap game and kill their precious time without even realizing it. I love sports, I even like cricket, but I think it has become too much commercialized now, and has turned into a money making machine for a group of people. What's more frustrating is- it's the money that WE fools are paying from our pocket. I wish people in India realize there are other sports too that are internationally recognized and save considerable amount of time when compared to cricket, yet they provide same or better level of excitement and entertainment. It's really sad to see a country of 1 billion people struggle at Olympics for a single medal. In my opinion, the single most reason for this is excess of cricket and utter igorance of other sports. If at all we (the public) could realize this and save a few millions from the cricket charitable fund that goes to BCCI every yr, I'm sure we will see more Olympic medals.
