A better title?
by Anand Rajamani on Oct 26, 2004 09:27 AM

Just a little poser for the author/editor.
Why could the title have not been "The game is bigger than the umpires." in place of what it is now?
Aren't you guys undermining a greater statement?

If aussies do regularly then it is ok. but if they want to make themselves look honest in umpire`s eyes and want to get away from descion during crunch times, then are going below standards. It was ok until sledging but this will be far too much.

Wishful thinking
by Dr T S Raman on Oct 21, 2004 08:05 AM

Border's belief that umpiring decisions tend to even themselves out over the years, is at best wishful thinking or, at worst, sheer hypocrisy. One would remind Border of the old proverb, two wrongs do not make a right.
Take the specific example of Sehwag's wrongful dismissal in Bangalore: given his form in the Chennai Test (he seemed to have absolutely no difficulty dealing with the Australian bowlers, including McGrath, Gillepsie and Warne) it seems quite plausible that the result in Bangalore would have gone the other way if Sehwag had not been given out. How can Border say this decision would even out over the years? If an innocent person is sent to the gallows by mistake, how can it ever be evened out? Also, remember that Sehwag was punished for trying to the tell the umpire he was not out. Why are umpires given this power of life and death, WITHOUT ACCOUNTABLITY? Why are we worshipping "umpires" like Bucknor and Shepherd (and now Bowden too), even after they are shown to be absolutely wrong, and express no remorse? Every one of them is resisting the use of TV replays for deciding doubtful cases.
