Baaaaaaaad umpireship
by Sayadu Rahman on Oct 10, 2004 05:05 PM

Penalty should be implemented to umpire also for their bad decisions. They are spoiling the career of players. Nowadays technology has improved a lot and why the umpires are not utilizing it. I mean, doubtful catches they can very well clear with third umpire. Main umpires are not giving any work to the third umpire. We doubt, they are also involving in match fixing?

Not fair Ashish

Mr Magrotra

I don't think it is fair to blame the bowler (McGrath) for the failings of the umpire. If you watch the replay of the dismissal, the commentators thought it was out as well - and it was only on the replay that the edge was visible.

I know it is the hobby of so called sports journalists in India to bag the Aussie players at every attempt. Australia, for once, have played the game in good spirits, with 2 batsman walking when the umpire has given them out.

But I am sure that before you made your baseless allegations you reviewed all of Harbhajans appeals and ensured that he never appealed when the batsman was clearly not out. Or maybe the rules only apply to Australians.

Not good enough - not as a journalist.

I gues, Steve Bucknor can do better at football than
messing with umpiring decisions and Bowden, "Please hold your nerve, and dont be carried away by the vociferous appeals".

Indians playing against 13
by Anantha Kumar on Oct 10, 2004 08:29 AM

Dear Sir,
Where is the code of conduct for umpiring mistakes? Can the ICC reverse the decisions of test matches, due to somebody else's mistakes?
While the players are fined for dissent, who will penalize the umpires for their errors?

India vs Australia
by sushruta on Oct 10, 2004 08:28 AM

I cant understand why is that the umpires make such bad decisions only against India in an India vs Australia series???!! This is happening time and again. I think it is better to make use of technology than making use of an erroneous or a biased human eye. A technology on the lines used in tennis, makes for a better view of cricket. Such decisions made by these umpires will only spoil the spirit of the sport! It will just move the spectators away. For example, I just got disgusted with Steve Bucknor's decision, so disgusted that I switched off the tv set and went to meet up with my friends. I hope the ICC takes note of this, this series generated a tremendous interest all over the world, and nobody wud expect umpires to dominate the game! If technology can improve decision making in a sport, why not use it????? ICC, are u listening? I suggest somebody makes a survey on the team that has been handed out the most number of bad umpiring decisions. And I am sure that India will win it hands down! This actually makes one feel if the umpires are biased!

Never Toss out your Hope.
by Shankar C.N. on Oct 10, 2004 07:16 AM

As I am attempting to 'SHARE' my views with other rediff readers there is already 8 'views' put up on the web pages. Some are about Umpiring also. There is no denying that Bucknor 'was' a Good Umpire. But so was Venkat. The difference is Venkat knew when to retire. Perhaps Bucknor needs the Money. That does not help the cause of Cricket in general and India's in particular. If only he wants to write a book if and when he retires(?) he will have so many causes to 'confess' about all the 'SLOW DEATH' verdicts he has inflicted - all by not following the rule book - when in doubt decide in favour of the Batsman. And as a consolation for my fellow readers here is a remedy: Toss a Coin to know if India will WIN the next Match. If you 'lose' the 'toss' don't get disheartened. Make it Best of Three. If you are losing by 3-0 or 2-1 make it Best of Five. KEEP Hopes alive. The World revolves on hope.

Is this not a result of over pampering?Doling out largesse of lakhs and lakhs of rupees to media created
master cricketers could not produce even doubl;e figures in either innings. The BCCI and the selectors are equally responsible for this fracas.

It's time to realize Tendulkar's cricket for the country
by rajan kumar on Oct 10, 2004 03:00 AM

Everybody has been saying all the negative things about Tendulkar, which is only partly correct. It's said that he plays for the records. To get this thing straight everyone in the world is playing for the records and fame. Captain of the team plays to win the match, which makes him a successful captain. Captain wants to make runs, get wickets and also wants to win the match for his record. I have seen many indian players (forget players from other countries) saying that "I have been criticised for not scoring etc, but now I can shut their mouth and have shown them that I can still play good", what is this, this is just personal benefit. There are many other things to say, but that's not the scope here.

Tendulkar on the other hand has always remained down-to-earth. He has played many innings at risk just to make the country win, but unfortunately during that time he was the only player in a team (one-man-team). He left the captaincy because no other batsman could play good innings but him.

Last, but the most important thing, all these years he was the only person in the team to carry all the burden on his shoulders, but now everybody is firing from his shoulders.
