In the 1981 Melbourne test, the bowling in Australia's 2nd innings was actually opened by Karsan Ghavri (who got Dyson and Chappell in successive balls) and Sandip Patil. Kapil Dev was unfit to open the bowling but declared himself fit the next day (Day 5). The next day, Kapil and Doshi bowled unchanged bowling out Australia for 81.
This is perhaps the only time that India opened the bowling with a non regular fast bowler despite having two regular fast bowlers on the team
