Its shame for a coach like respected BOB
by Sunil on Aug 01, 2004 01:27 PM

My dear Bob,
U r in cricket for so long and ur life is cricket. Dont u think of it before the tournment or before the start of this match. Its a shame on a respected person like to comment after the match which gives wrong signals to ur team (Pakistan for now). Would u say the same if u would be the Indian coach???
What about the final, a single game, which decides the fate of a team after a consucutive victories in league and super league level.
Any ideas are comments from ur side for a single final?
After all its a game and a world winner may lose in one match, which may be a final, and not a champion. Any comments from ur side???
And its a game for entertaining.
It would be appreaciated that all those accepted for the rules and regulations at the begining of the tournment should bound to those and play a healthy cricket with out such comments.
U have all the right to point out ur views, but not with on the immideate results. U can point all these before the tournment are wait until the tournment is over.
Is it not in ur knowledge before the start of the tournment???
Make Pakistan as a team stronger than these cheap comments, which may guide to a wrong approch.
Suni

Cribbing by the Pakistanis on Bonus Point Issue
by K.Bala Subramanian on Jul 31, 2004 06:31 PM

It is very surprising, that Bob Woolmer, the coach of the Pakistan cricket team criticise the bonus points system. The rules of the Asia cup was formulated and agreed upon by the respective boards before the commencement of the competition.

(2)The Pakistani team,Shoib Akhter ,in particular harps about the fact that a team winning 4 matches(i.e.India)is in the finals and the team winning 5 matches(i.e.Pakistan)is out of the competition.(Are they stupid! or Is it a question of sour grapes)
It is to be noted that India lost to Srilanka in the preliminary stage of the competition, but qualified for the super league(2nd stage),and as per the rules of the competition ,the results of the preliminary stage are not carried forward to the second stage.

Further,It would be proper for the Pakistani team to remember the world cup of 1992, where they lost to India by 43 runs, but qualified for the semi-final because of the points gained thru a reined off match,in which they were bowled out for 74 runs ,but saved by the rain.
May be Shoib Akhter should speak to Imran Khan about this.

The spirit of a sportsman
by KAUSHIK on Jul 31, 2004 10:47 AM

Mr. Woolmer, the looser also gets a trophy, remember that. Just like that, this new rule rewards the loosers with a bonus! Well, rules, whether fair or unfair, should be opposed while they are introduced into the tournament. Mr. Woolmer, if he is a real sportsman, should not speak offensive about rules after loosing the match. Doesn't reflect nice about a sportsman's spirit. There are many rules in a game which may hurt some side or the other, but they should be opposed then they are introduced. And most important of all, they knew rules well before game started, so why not stop India from getting the bonus point? That was actually the game, not only the winning! Better to understand all rules first, then play accordingly. No use crying later. Inshallah, we thought you were a good sportsman!

losing side should not get bonus

The rules are decided well before the tournament started. India did not perform up to the expectations . However it ensured getting the bonus point to be in the final Pakistan was aware that by reaching 241 India will get the bonus point. So where is the question of India "should not get". Mr Woolmer,if the rules are different , Indian Team would have according then played to ensure their place in the final.

Bonus point system
by Raju Maliger on Jul 30, 2004 10:05 AM

Guys,we never expected such a statement from Bob Wolmer, so called the hi-tech coach of Pakistan. He knew the rules at the beginning of the tournament. Why didn't he utter a single word about the bonus-point system then? Pakistan and himself were desperate to win that match against India and nothing other than that counted. But, Indian think-tank did a good thing by claiming the bonus-point. Well there is no point fretting about it now. Bob, you got to be intelligent.

New bonus system
by KKK on Jul 30, 2004 04:12 AM

My rule would be something like this:

If the team loses by just say 1% or 2% of the opponent then the losers get a bonus point.

If the team wins by more than say 25% margin then the winners get a bonus point.

Otherwise nobody gets a bonus point.

Bonus points
by SG on Jul 30, 2004 04:08 AM

The format of the asia cup does not lend itself well as a platform to evaluate the bonus points system. If you disregard the first round u will see that India, Pakistan, Srilanka defeated each other in a circular manner and everbody defeated Bangladesh. But since India was more consistent in the second round, it made it to the finals. So if something has to be changed then it has to be this two round system instead of the bonus points system.
