Won 4 ......Interesting
by shrikant on Jul 30, 2004 04:26 PM

Hey guys,
Watch out this great team which is proud of defeating Bangladesh twice and hong kong once in the tournament.
Effectively they won only one game since their stars were good.
they neither deserve to be in the final and appropriately so, they are not in the fray.
Kudos to pakistanis for consoling themselves for victory over india, but, we are taking the cup.
We won inspite of losing to them and .....sorry i don't want to hurt them
Hip Hip Hurray

didn't pakistan know about the bonus point???
by Avinash on Jul 29, 2004 05:52 PM

Pakistan should rue their chances against SriLanka. But what were they doing against India?? They could have very well earned the bonus point. They did not push themselves to dismiss India below 240. They could have very well done this after the dismissal of Sachin.

Was Inzy not aware of the cut off score for the victory with bonus point. Any particular rule applies to all the countries who are participating in the competition.

What if roles were reversed in the Ind/Pak match? If Pak were in a situation that India found themselves in at that point of the tournament, would Pak have raised voices against the bonus point system??

Each particular tournament has its particular rules and it needs to abided by, by all the teams participating in the tournament.

Bonus Point rule is flawless
by Shyamalendu Prusty on Jul 29, 2004 04:42 PM

There is no flaw with bonus point rule. This rule is very much impartial. Suppose there is no bonus point rule. In that case run rate will be taken into consideration. If well calculate run rate then you can see that Pakistan is having lowest run rate. Let me give a example here. Consider 3 matches between India, Srilanka & Pakistan.
India lost the match to Pakistan by 59 runs. According to new run rate calculation India should have the run rate around -.98 and Pakistan will have +0.98.
India beat Srilanka by 4 runs.In this match Srilanka will get around -0.03 & India will get +0.03.
Srilanka beat Pakistan in 32 overs. In this case the run rate for Srilanka should be more than +1.1 & for Pakistan it will be less than -1.1.

Now take the sum of run rates & choose the best two teams. So there is no point for Woolmer saying that bous point rule is incorrect.

two losses yet into the finals
by pradeep on Jul 29, 2004 03:08 PM

what do you think of the rules that allow a team with two losses in the preliminary stages to reach the finals and throw another team with one loss out of the tournament.

certainly needs to be reviewed...

Mr. Woolmer might not remember, how the same pakistanis reached finals of 1992 world, from that one abandened match between India and Srilanka depriving India an easiest win,
These things do happen Some time this side some times the other cries fowl.

Dont rely on your luck
by Sankar on Jul 29, 2004 02:02 PM

Pakistan doesnt deserve even the win against india. you can get a batsman out for more than 3 times. Be sportive. India made malik out 3 times as so is for jayasuriya. Dont rely on your luck. poor umpiring made India in a difficult situation, but India had made a way to the final.

You are right

Bob Woolmer is cent precent right. Pakistan had just one bad game and they are out. Pakistan played lot better than India in this tournament and still find themselves out. I think bonus point system is flawed, 60 run marging for bonus point is too much, it should be around 20-25 runs. Whatever, Indians showed lot of grit in their last match and i hope Indians will now find their feer and confidence and win the tournament. All the best India.

Just bonus points, what about umpiring?
by jignesh on Jul 29, 2004 05:29 AM

do not you think, Mr. Woolmer, that you guys won the game because largely Dravid was wrongly given lbw? Everyone knows that with Sachin and Dravid playing any total is achievable and considering how good in form Dravid is.

Why are you not ruing over the poor umpiring? Because your team is not affected?

the bonus point system worked against you this time, but it will work for sometime. What then?

This is completely a fair game, it was not that umpire pulled out the finger from his pocket because he felt like raising.

And regarding your only lose? Forget you played just two quality games. Won one and lost one. REst were not even worth time pass.

Anyway, alvida!

Asia cup points - not skewed but can be renamed
by Sriram on Jul 29, 2004 04:42 AM

There is a large number of people with the opinion that the points system is not fair. But I differ from the opinion. In the past there was no bonus point.
To evaluate how well the teams play apart from winning , bonus points were awarded to the winning team if they win by a considerable margin.
Now only the winning team has a bonus point but the fact that the other team played badly should also be considered for allowing the winning team to get a bonus point otherwise it will not be fair for other teams not involved in the contest. So winning by a considerable margin should have an impact of both the teams. It can be done either by docking point for the team losing very badly or by giving a bonus point to the team that did not lose badly. But the former would make more sense in terms of the table even though their effect is the same
India got a bonus point by not losing badly against pak but pak did lose badly against lanka. So instead of giving a bonus point to the losing team for not losing badly, it would help if the team losing badly is docked one point(-1) which in this case going to be the same as pak will get -1 for losing badly to lanka and ind -0 for not losing badly
