B Williams ''run out''?
by Dr T S Raman on Jan 19, 2004 10:10 AM  | Hide replies

The score card shows B Williams as "run out". Should it not be "stumped"? It would undoubtedlyu have been "stumped" if Dravid had been standing close to the the stumps. Strictly speaking, the distance should not make a difference.

You are highly mistaken, my dear mate! The rules are simple! A batsman is RUN OUT if he is attempting to take a run/runs or attempting to return to his crease after an aborted run & a fielder (which includes the wicketkeeper) breaks the stumps with the ball while he is out of his crease.

A batsman is STUMPED out if he misses the ball while attempting to play it & in the process steps out of the crease & the wicketkeeper whips off the bails.

The main difference lies in the fact that a batsman is RUN OUT if he is attempting to TAKE A RUN OR RUNS & subsequently is found short of his crease where as a batsman is STUMPED out if he is attempting to PLAY A SHOT & is subsequently found short of his crease. The distance just does not play any role here!

Brad Williams was attempting to take a run when Rahul Dravid's throw hit the stumps; that's why it had been ruled run out & not stumped. On the lighter side, you will seldom find fast bowlers getting a batsman out stumped; usually it is the slow or spin bowlers who get batsmen out stumped!!

Milestone !!

This match was a milestone for India and may be a starting of a new era in one-day series. I hope that this trend is continues with this extremely talented new generation team.

why rohan gavaskar?
by Paresh on Jan 19, 2004 06:43 AM  | Hide replies

It was a great performance by the Indian team.

Only intriguing aspect for me personally is WHY ROHAN GAVASKAR is in the team?

The new bowler Lashmipathy Balaji impersonifies a NEW INDIA. Hungry to prove a point to the world. Hungry for victory! We need guys like him nor Rohan Gavaskar.

Thanks

Why rohan because his father is gavaskar..the 100 odd million indian cricket lovers will not be able to change our selectors views...if ur father has influence , then that is the best qualification. It is really a shame, not one report in any newspaper standing forward to this crime on indian cricket.

I'm not really sure if that is an "official" word and am wondering if reporting such a "possibly theory" is healthy journalism!!!

One Day Victory
by Arman on Jan 19, 2004 04:10 AM

It was nice to watch innings from Sachin, Dravid, and Laxman in "one" day. Thanks to "one" day matches we were able to watch all three in a day otherwise with this australlian attack and picthes it may not be possible. One point I do want to make is although Laxman's innings was a class but was short of my expectations by about 20 odd balls and specially between 35th to 43rd over.

Man Of The Match
by Arpan on Jan 19, 2004 01:04 AM

There's no doubt that Laxman's innings was splendid. His knock was instrumental in India's win over the Aussies. But with due respect to Laxman, I guess either Irfan Pathan or Saurav Ganguly should have been chosen as the man of the match - the former for his superlative bowling (3 for 64) or the latter for his captaincy coz of the tactical bowling changes & field placements he incorporated. Balaji not only took more wickets but was also more economical than Pathan (4 for 48). But I would still go for Pathan since the 3 wickets he accounted for were top order batsmen whereas Balaji's wickets included 2 top order batsmen & 2 tailenders. Also the catch Pathan took to dismiss Jason Gillespie was spectacular since he not only had to run backwards but also had to counter the swirling motion of the ball while it was air-borne which was taking the ball away from him. Coupled with this is the fact that taking sky high catches under lights is no cakewalk! It's not that I am trying to undermine the catch Balaji took to get rid of Gilly. After all, that catch paved the door for an Indian win. Moreover, the pitch was batsman friendly & offered no help to the bowlers. So I would go for Pathan!

Laxman - Sheer Brilliance !
by businessguy on Jan 18, 2004 10:42 PM

I am not sure how people say Laxman is unfit for one-dayers! I am not changed because of his today's century! Ever since Dinesh Mongia was called in, we repented his dropping off the team!

Players of his calibre can easily make runs in one-dayers too and hope critics will realise this soon!

Team peformance
by Sujith on Jan 18, 2004 10:15 PM

Its very nice when India take control of majority of the match and pull of a very satisfactory win over the World Champions. Once our team start believing that they can beat the mighty Aussie, they will be true champions. All credit goes to Saurav Ganguly who has marshalled his young team (with some experienced guys) very well. He has made groomed them very well and they respond to his decisions with pride and respect.
Laxman is at his best when playing against the kangroos and Rahul has proved once again that he is a true world class batsman and great team man. Now, with him improvising a lot, it will be soon when he will receive his share of accolades and fame.

Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!
Sujith
