STAKES??? WHAT STAKES??????
by Somdev on Feb 12, 2004 02:19 PM

I believe the writer wants to reduce the tension that is building in the subcontinent about this test series. This is a laudable effort. However, what is the meaning of the phrase "With the stakes higher than ever" in the concluding line? Why are the stakes higher than ever? What is at stake is a Test Series, nothing more. Pakistan has come to India many times before and vice versa. Why are the stakes so great this time? It is not even the case that this is a match between two of the world's best teams. As per all rankings, both Pakistan and India lie in the middle rung(3-6) of cricket playing nations. True, the countries does not have the friendliest of relations and the Indian team is going there after 15 years or so.(India went there to play 3 ODIs in between if I remember correctly.....). But that certainly does not make it the most important series EVER.

We all want the Indian team to go there, play good cricket and come back victorious. So, Mr. Writer, please do not defeat your own article by overhyping the series with such turn of words.
