Tendulkar can never match Gavaskar
by Ravichandran. B on Dec 13, 2004 01:36 PM

Mere statistics & averages alone never portray the true greatness of players from different eras yet Gavaskar played at a time when some of the world's deadly fast players ruled the roost.A Marshall, a Garner, an Andy Roberts, a Sylvester Clerk, a Thommo, a Denis Lillee, a Bob Willis, a Hadlee, Imran Khan, Sikhander Bakht will definitely send shivers in the batsman's spine whereas in the present teams, except Australia and to a good extent Pakistan, none of the teams have more than one good fast bowler.Gavaskar's career ave. of 65.41 stands way above the rest whereas Tendulkar couldn't negotiate a new comer in the name Pedro Collins when India toured West Indies last time.Take away Tendulkar's runs against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, the average will present a sorry figure for a purist.Tendulkar never opened the batting in Test Cricket.Today the bowlers are restricted to bowl not more than 1 bouncer per over.Just by matching Sunil's 34 centuries, how Sachin be hailed the greatest Indian?Sachin's tally of 100s in ODI are 26 more than Viv Richards scored in his entire career but does it mean Tendulkar is a better batsman than Viv Richards is? How ridiculous & foolish it can be.
