Different Opinion
by Angie Roberts-Gray on Jan 27, 2005 06:06 PM

Hi,

Anyone reading this who is against John Wright being the Coach of the Indian Cricket team should get a life and occupy yourself some other way. He is the father of my friend Harry who is in my brothers cricket team. And only just in this past week they have had a cricket tournament and John was there and I think he is a great coach if he wasnt how did he end up being it in the 1st place?? Exactly..! He has the perfect characteristics of being a great coach calm,knowledgeable,fair,understanding..etc..He is a great guy and you dont know him personally to be able to have an opinion. Dont just listen to what you hear as it is almost always not the truth!

what can he do
by sudheer on Sep 05, 2004 02:37 AM

the important thing that comes to my notice is
when sachin tendulkar is not playing why should these selectors going for rohan gavaskar.if somebody who plays well is not there it is better to go for a young
players.
thats looking funny for me.really what these selectors thinking of.if they want someone really experienced they would have gone for kapil dev or sidhu or at the most azaruddhin that would be the better option.
first of all the problem is with selectors .first change them and then come to john wright.

The same story repeating since Asia Cup
by svv on Sep 01, 2004 06:50 PM

In the Asia Cup and the present Holland series the main problem is arising in the middle overs, where the run-rate has to be atleast maintained, if not raised. The openers have given a considerably good start to the innings, but after 15-20 overs, the run-rate FALLS considerably. In all the games, the middle overs have yielded 2-3 runs/over, which increases the pressure on the batsmen after 35 overs. As a result, The initial run-rate, going over 6 runs/over after 15 overs, drops down to 3.5-4.0 runs/over. This negative feature has consistently been seen in the Indian innings even when they have won. After the 20th over, the statistics always show 10-15 runs in last five overs, upto 35-40 overs. I still don't understand how this drawback has escaped the watchful eyes of Mr. John Wright, and the mistake is being repeated game after game. It is now high time that Mr. Wright works upon this illness, which the Team India has developed in the Asia Cup, and finds a proper cure for Team India to taste success again. The same story is being repeated in the 1st match aginst England as I am writing this. The Indian innings has ended at 170 in
43.5 overs, the runs coming in same fashion.

what rubbish
by vishal on Sep 01, 2004 03:09 PM

just a couple of bad games and ppl think that its the end of the world...and that too seasoned cricketers like Srinath...His categorical statement of Bob Woolmer's laptop being the cause of Pak's gud show is ridiculous to say the least...and Sri is ravin about England's recent success but he conveniently chooses to forget that England's recent show in ODIs is still pathetic...
i am sure that it's the long lay off rust thats buggin indian cricket and it wont be long b4 the men in blu start rockin the cricketin world again !!! watch out sri...i am sorry but u'll hav to eat ur words !!!

it's just a temporary bad patch...
by deepak on Sep 01, 2004 12:45 PM

there's nothing wrong in Srinath saying that Wright should look for some new game plans.
at times improvisation is only way to perfection.

but having said that i would also like to make a point that the current team is very talented and it is only a bad patch they r going thru now.

maybe as Srinath says the team will have to look at new ways to deliver what they r really capable of as a team. just a matter of accepting change with open arms & taking it with the right attitude.

Indian Team at Present
by Sasidharan on Aug 31, 2004 01:04 PM  | Hide replies

Indian Team at present is in shackles. It is not playing as a unit. The fielding is found wanting
on many situations. It is a pity our players does
not understand the need to cover the wicket in the
absence of wicketkeeper or bowler from that area.
Results in overthrows. Fielders should attack the ball rather than waiting for it to come to them.
Throwing to the wicket is a pity to watch from many
players. There are many spent horses in the present
team. The spirit is not there. Ganguly bears a tired
look. Dravid is spoiled behind the wicket. Lakshman
is not playing with responsibility. He is a batsman
who can decide whether he wants to get out or stick
on rather than the bowlers. Too many runs are scored
through third man area. Kumble is a burden for the team. It is a pity he could not learn to bat for all
thease years. It is good that Zaheer is dropped. He need a big break. Our bowlers except Pathan and Balaji to an extend, lacks line and length. Look how
Sri Lanka's Vaz bowls. How consistant he is there to see. We need more allrounders. Harbajan is no more a force in International cricket. Nilesh Kulkarni would be a choice. Kaif is only a shadow of his ability.

Hai,

You are right to point out about recent matches
indians were losing spree. I do not understand
how come the experienced player like Lakshman, sewag,
Ganguly got out very cheaply against low spin, the
match against pakistan that too from Afridi. At the
out set, we need professional keeper not a part time
keeper. We can even drop one batsman like kaif who is
not doing the job up to the mark. Bring the new guy
Dinesh who can even bat well. As for as fielding is
concern, player should run before the ball not after
the ball. Indians need one jonty roads for the fielding department. It is not too late , let them
get a wake up call to show their full potential skill
to beef up in all department.

Two points !
by SR on Aug 30, 2004 09:42 PM  | Hide replies

I agree with one reader who says that Srinath himself had no plans while his playing days. Except the last 2 years of his career where he actually started to pitch the ball up and reap rewards he was always guilty of pitching too short and would have had many more wickets if he'd started doing it earlier - and that too was a forced result since he'd lost some pace and was compelled to pitch up further.

But his point about Wright is well taken - I also think that we must go a a step further and appoint a new coach next year (since Wright's contract has already been extended by a year)While Wright has been instrumental is our team's recent successes and deserves credit for taking a team with very little planning and work ethic and setting us on the right path, the team now needs someone who is an even better student of the game - maybe a Dean Jones. This would serve us well in extracting the best from the players. For eg: Agarkar (given that he's able to keep himself fit !) has all the talent in the world but has spent 6 years of his international cricket as an underperformer - maybe a sharp mind will help him overcome his technical/temperamental problems & perform to potential !

Team spirit
by R.Sridhar on Aug 30, 2004 01:12 PM

Hai,

At the outset, we do not have team spirit. Selecting
of team that matters more when you are playing outside
soil. If you are selecting 15 players they should
have more experience in playing out side india. You
just can not select team because the player scored
in ranji/duleep trophy. Selection based on the all
round performance against all the country. Indians
lakh of good fast bowler at the moment, first thing
is to send all the fast bowler to out side country
to trained properly. They should bowl straight to
stump with correct accuracy. It is not that bowler
should only do the bowling job they should also show
their performance in batting atleast to score 30 to
40 runs. You need to strengthen the team spirits contribute to the team as much as you can. If the
batsman not scored two three matches replace them
immediately. What actually we need is all round
performance by the player. Do not select team just
because they did well in the past. See what they are
now and who is in good form. Each player should analise their mistake and rectify the same before the
next match begins. If indians needs to win future
matches they have to increase the tempo.

First of all Sri said what he felt. Here no body is wrong. I must say that ganguly has to give a thought abt team's position coz if there is no result BCCI will not let Mr. Wright to continue for another year as well as physio. They are doing their work. I must say its the complacency that indian team takes into its mind b4 entering the tournament. But i hope no i feel they will regain their form b4 champions trophy. We can remember we were in the same status b4 entering worldcup down and out. But nobody expected india 2 reach final. So i say to all indian fans keep faith in indian team as something really big waiting for the opponents. It is natural that when we loose silly games fans get frustrated especially on finals but indians has the potential to bounce back.
