Wicket Keeping
by sasidharan on Sep 08, 2004 03:32 PM

Good Wicket Keeping is indeed an art. In my rating, Allan Knot of England was the best wicket keeper of all time. Then our Farook Engineer, Syed Kirmani, Rod Marsh, Wasim Bari, Kiran More and so on. Our spin quatret were luck enough to have good wicket keepers and close in fielders like Eknath Solkar, Abid Ali in their time. India today does not have a wicket keeper of world class quality. May be the selectors know the reason for the same. It is true that a good wicket keeper is vital to any team, especially for the bowlers to help to boost their confidence. Bowling whether spin or pace does not matter for a able wicket keeper. We do experiements only to meet with failures. Why can't we choose a specialist WK and train him properly. Any player will lost his confidence if he is not sure of his place in the team. Anyone who had been selected must give at least 3-6 chances to prove his mettle. I must say Dravid is at a loss behind the wicket. His bating ability also suffered due to the pressure. Ganguly should not pressurise his to keep wicket. Instead we should opt out the out of form spinners. Both Sevag, Yuvaraj can take wickets with their spin. Then why we need specialists?

It is really disgusting...
by Ram ME Chandran on Sep 01, 2004 11:12 PM

when everyone is yelling around stressing the need for a quality keeper,we come up to find that the captain who has taken a young lad with him on tour makes a statement that "The Wall" has not succombed under pressure and will continue to be the 'keeper in ODI's...

The question is , y on the first place, Dinesh Kaarthick was selected to be on tour? and secondly, y isnt he given a chance to play even a single chance to play given india's dismal performances in both the VIDEOCON cup AND THE NATWEST CHALLENGE?

I agree with Kirmani ...

But at the same time I would agree with Gopalakrsihnan, that the quality bowling comes with the quality wicket keeping. Spinners can try various types.

spinners and wicket keeping
by T.S.Gopalakrishnan on Aug 22, 2004 07:14 PM

I quite agree with kirmani on the subject of the
combination of spin and wicketkeeping. But I feel
that because of bad wicketkeeping good spinners
are not able to take the risks and tampt the
batsmen. They are always worried that because
of bad wicket keepers the batsmen would take
more risks and play the spinners as they like
