GANGULY OR YUVRAJ TO OPEN
by M.R.SRINIVASAN on Apr 13, 2004 08:55 AM

Team Indias management keeps making plenty of noise about predominance of teams interests over interests of individual players. This dictum was carried to such a ridiculous extent that a batsman [in this case, it happened to be Tendulkar] was denied a few overs to complete his double century at Multan even though, in the context of the match situation at that point in time, it would never have made any difference at all to the outcome of the match, by any stretch of imagination. If the team management were to be really serious in continuing with this laudable policy, it should have asked Sourav Ganguly to sit out for the decider at Rawalpindi simply for the reason that he is coming out of an injury and is definitely not match fit. Sourav is the best captain India has produced in the last 70 years but sound logic and good reasoning called for his sitting out for the crucial third test. The only change should have been Nehra instead of Agarkar. It will be a huge surprise if Ganguly manages to make a decent contribution with the bat in the test, particularly if he opts to open the innings, given the lack of match practicE.

pathetic

It is pathetic to see how politics play in Indian Team. What was the reason to drop Akash Chopra from the next test match. It doesn't mean that if a player flops he should be shown the door. It is harsh to see Indian Cricket in all stages doing this. There are many flop shows but still players continue to be in the team. And I am so sorry for akash Chopra for his partnership and Sehwag's was considered the best. And why damn these selectors do not have brains. That's why we need to have educated selectors not village people. My heartly concern is with Chopra and i want to say that he is really a blessed openor. Which people are not realising he is an exceptionally silly mid-off catcher. Who has taken many catches in that position. Which can never filled with youvrag singh or any people. Selector please do think again if you are taking any such decisions.

Who should open in the third test?
by sameer on Apr 12, 2004 03:22 PM

Sourav should open, as this would strengthen the resolve of the batsmen to score better. They shouldn't rely on Yuvraj to do any miracles at the opening slot, which he is not used to.On the other hand sourav is a senior player and should take the opening lead as any captain should. It is high time he started scoring. Waiting to see him blaze like he used to.

Stupid decision!
by Anirudh on Apr 12, 2004 03:22 PM

Removing Chopra so that Yuvraj Singh or Ganguly can play is an absolutely thoughtless decision. Personally, I would ask for Ganguly's removal as his batting performances in the past couple of years do not warrant a place, at least in the test side. However, all of us know that this is not going to happen. Well, then Yuvraj has to sit out. Harsh on the young man, no doubt, but I honestly think that Chopra and Sehwag are a very good opening combination and we should not separate them only on the basis of runs scored by somebody who usually bats at number five or six. One unorthodox opener is enough, we do not need another.
One has got to look at the long-term effects of this decision to see how foolish it is. Yes, there will be people who will point at Sehwag and show us how an unorthodox opener has done wonders for India. However, he is an exception, and exceptions are rare.
I hope, infact I am sure, Chopra will come into the
