Chopra No Match For Yuvi
by Alok on May 22, 2004 10:30 AM

Chopra is no match for Yuvraj. Cricket requires batsmen wo can rescue teams at difficult situations. Chopra is too defensive. If an Opener can't score at 50% strike rate in batsmen friendly pitches, then he is no good. Any one with Sehwag as parner can make a Century partnership and it should not be made a big issue. He has to be more aggressive. The message is clear :- TO GET SELECTED AHEAD OF YUVRAJ OR SEHWAG, CHOPRA HAS TO PLAY BETTER THAN THEM. Consistently making low scores will not help the team.

The present indian team looks so strong because Sachin, Saurav, Dravid, Sehwag, Laxman and Yuvraj has ability to make big scores frequently. So even if 3 top batsmen fail, India can score 500 runs. Sadly Chopra doesnot have ability to make big scores.

Its ok if its one-off test
by ramprasad on Apr 20, 2004 03:22 AM

I think Chopra should be a regular opener. He has done commendably in the last dozen or so tests.

Creating controversy cannot be your only way of attracting audience
by Santanu on Apr 18, 2004 10:31 AM

The fact is not unknown at all that Ridiff is anti-Ganguly. Aakash Chopra has a long way to go and I am pretty sure that if he has it in him, he will return. For now the results are on the board and it is clear that the decision paid off and went for the best interest of the team and country. I think Chopra is out of the final 11, Kaif is out of even the test squad, Harvajan and Zahir is out due to injury and still India wins is a very good sign. I have heard an interview of Ajay Ratra in Rediff a few days ago, your objective of the presentations sound very much the same. Creating controversy cannot be your only way of attracting audience, please pick something better and we all are getting a little tired of cheap Chutneys.

Spare a thought for poor Chopra
by Dinesh on Apr 13, 2004 11:13 PM

Hi Faisal,
You should understand cricket before writting an
article. You are so concerned about Chopra who has
done very little with lots of failures (see your
statistics) in comparison to Ganguly who is
excellent player and captain. How you can blame
Ganguly about the failure of Chopra? You journalists
ask Ganguly whether Yubraj will play 3rd test?
Do you expect him to answer no? There is a limit
of your stupidity. If you write like this your
days as journalist is numbered unless you paid
by some match fixer.

Sparing a thought for poor chopra

It is ridiculous to drop Akash Chopra to pave the way for Youraj Singh or the return of Ganguly. If Yovraj deserves a place in the team on the strength of his two knocks in this series it shall be at the expense of Ganguly and not Akash Chopra. Akash has firmly entrenched himself as an opener and he should be persisted by all means. We have been searching for a reliable opener for quite some time and the BCCI even engaged Gavaskar to recommend the ideal opener among the many contenders and he made a good recommendation
with Akash Chopra. Now after a couple failures in one test he is put on the chopping block.

The Selectors have done the same mistake recently with Sanjay Bangar who performed exceedingly well as an opener and infact revived India's fortunes overseas on the tour of England. but dropped after a couple of failures in NZ.

If the selectors act like this , India can never have a decent opening pair .

Finally, all this because of Ganguly's funny attitude. In my view Ganguly should be non-playing captain if we can follow on the tennis lines.

Ganguly should sit out
by Sridhar on Apr 13, 2004 02:14 AM

Dropping of Akash Chopra for the third test is very sad. Chopra has been playing very well and has been giving good support to Virendra Shewag and Dravid and co. have had good knocks in the middle order. He failed in Lahore and the middle order crumbled. Just the way one or two good knocks does nout gurantee a place in the eleven, one or two failures should not make a player lose his place in the eleven.

I feel if somebody has to sit out, it has to be Ganguly himself. First, after the injury, he has had no match practice and we are not sure if he can last five full days. Secondly, his fielding has left a lot to be desired. Compared to that, Akash Chopra does good fielding in the close in and Yuvraj Singh of course is known for his fielding.Yuvraj if needed also provides variety to the attack with his slow left arm spin.

If the team is being selected on form, then Ganguly has no place.

Given all these there is no place for Ganguly. Dravid led the team admirably and hs bowling changes were good and he can do a decent job as captain. So where does Mr. Ganguly fit in here. He better be rested and get some match practice before he can be on the field again....

bound to happen
by nandu on Apr 12, 2004 10:29 PM  | Hide replies

This was bound to happen, because though we are all in awe for Mr. Chopra. We have to realize that lots of his shortcomings were not focused on since he was only asked to stay at the wicket and when he could not do that he was bound to be dropped. I should also add that he doesn't deserve to be dropped now, but I would say this was gonna happen sooner or later. Sorry for Akash that it happened sooner. On the other hand Yuvi not only did what was expected of him but went ahead. Any competition is not about doing what is expected of one but to better with each hurdle. Remember 'Higher, Farther, Faster' ?
