Rohan Gavaskar should be selected on NZ tour
by Pushpak Sarkar on Sep 13, 2003 07:01 PM

By playing well consistently for the last few years, Rohan Gavaskar has proved he can walk into the Indian team, on his own cricketing abilities. In all fairness then , Rohan should be drafted into the Indian team this year itself. In the past, players with performances far inferior to Gavaskar Jr. have got selected, often due to whimsical or biased selection.

Hey Faisal. Writing about Rohan Gavaskar, what did you mean by """""Batting with composure beyond his years""""". Gimme a break man. This guy is almost twenty eight years old. Or did you want us to think he was eighteen.

Individualism Vs. Purpose of Challenger Trophy
by Satish Kumar on Sep 11, 2003 10:30 PM

Normally I like what Faisal writes. However, I was quite disappointed to see he taking issues about lack of team spirit in the Challenger trophy? Isn't the purpose of the Challenger trophy to find players for a few slots in the national team? If that is the case, how can you not try to have self-interest uppermost in your mind. If we are really concerned about which "TEAM" wins the trophy then yes, the attitude can be faulted. But, we don't even remember who was the winner last time, so stop dishing out your idealism and arm-chair criticism for once and accept the main purpose of the Challenger series. Then you'll see why fringe and the not-so established players are playing the way they are. Nothing wrong in that I find.

It's nice to see u praise Gavaskar, but in the mean time give due credit to Sriram who stabilised an innings which the master blaster found difficult. Be impartial in ur reviews never get biased.

Faisal, for people like me based away from India and depending solely upon your reports, you must mention the names of the players whose attitude appeared selfish. Also how was Gavaskar's backfoot play. The report from Vijaykar in TOI mentions this to be his weakness, if at all. Pls do enlighten us. Keep up the good work. You are doing a great job.

Challenger series
by Muralidhar Rao on Sep 11, 2003 01:31 PM

Faisal Sheriff is being very harsh on those who failed to get big scores in the 1st match. Nobody can judge players on the basis of one match. Cricket is a lucky game. It is true that Rohan Gavaskar deserves a chance to be in the national side and so does Rayudu. Rohan has never been tried so far. On the other hand players like Laxman, Badani, Sriram, Gambhir,Jaffer,Parthiv and Ratra have got their chances in the international events and have failed miserably with the bat.Consistency has never been the character of these players.

Hi Muralidhar,

All the players you mentioned didn't fail miserably. They haven't given a fair bit of chance in the international matches. They are making a comeback with their whole hearted efforts. So, don't demean those valiant indian soldiers. I do agree with yourpoin that you can't gauge a person in a single match.

Regards,
Chandru.

a ballad for rohan?
by karthik on Sep 11, 2003 11:49 AM

I am terribly disappointed that faisal has barely said anything about sriram's contribution in the match. his 77 was just 2 runs short of rohan's score. when writing a 'match report' one should not be overwhelmed by a personal perspective. the report should have been more objective, talking about each contribution without prejudice. I am terribly disppointed!
