The setting up of spinner's academy is the best thing to have happened to Indian Cricket of late.Being world class spinners of their era they know each aspect of spin and they also know the reason[ODIs] for the deterioration of quality spin bowling in India.
Flight and turn are the main weapons for any spinners. If u compare anil kumble and other spinners of the quality of Shane Warne or Murali, it is evident that Kumble suffers due to lack of flight and turn on placid tracks.Too much of ODI cricket is the main reason for ppl forget the basics of spin which is flight and turn.
So I guess they have done a gr8 thing by setting up an academy although a lil late. Moreover a 14 year guy shud rather try for a test spot than a one day spot as Test match wickets are the ones which speaks abt the quality of a Bowler.
Any game survives only when people love the game and spend money on it. Give people what they love and not what you think is good. How many people today prefer to watch a test match than a one-dayer. In fact all the comittee members in BCCI should be sacked and replaced with new breed. They should learn from the model followed in US/UK or any european country, how they have developed the sports facilities and are helping the sport.
I believe the author has got it spot on. With all due respect to bishy, venkat, chandra and prasanna , I am all in the opinion that they are turning a little hypocrytic. Their arguments and so called expert opinions are nowadays not based on the conditions of the game but purely on the weight of their reputation. Yes no doubt that they have been Indian cricket's pillars. I have personally admired how batsmen used to tremble facing chandra's faster ones , but that was an altogether different century. When they were playing, there was no gilcrist ,sachin or laras who are not only complete destroyers of any bowling attack, but are compact defense wise too. Yes agreed that there were world class batsmen, but their atacking insticnt was not even half of what it is today. When a batsman like sachin steps down and clobbers the ball over your head or plays a reverse sweep, it takes a real braveheart to still toss up the ball. Thats what today's spinners are facing. So dont be critical old fellas. Teach them what you know and allow them to develop their own style.
mak, u forget ,the old'uninformed' spinners have also won us matches abroad on pitches tailormade for fast bowlers. so kindly refrain from comparing the new lot with the golden oldies.
Ex-players are not necessarily experts untill they prove themselves to be. Most of them are desperately hanging on to their hackneyed ideas. Very few have actually been able to accept that cricket has changed, esp. that ODIs are here to stay. If you read Prasanna's column on rediff you'll find that he has only 2 things to say -- we should always play 2 spinners and they must always toss the ball and attack! Any sensible person will know that teams should be chosen based on form, conditions, and many other factors and BOTH offense and defense should be part of a bowler's stategy.
The spin legends mean well...but probably Krishnamachari Srikanth's suggestion is more appropriate. Srikkanth suggested that instead of banning one days for under 15 group - we can have one days without any field restrictions or restrictions on the overs that a bowler can bowl. This will satisfy the spirit in which the recommendation was made by the spin legenda
