Tim May moots ODI league
by Shrikar Dorai on Jun 06, 2003 02:38 AM

I think the idea is worth serious consideration. The advantages are evident: a) all countries get to see all other nations in their backyards at least once a year, b) Given the equal weightage given to home & away games it will be a true measure of a team's quality c)it would make the game finally have a larger purpose other than just that match's result as the outcome from every match would go towards determining who makes it to the top at the end of the season. The disadvantages: a) it would be a logistical nightmare - if we thought cricketers travelled a lot right now imagine how their itineraries will look after implementing this league format ! b) The ICC will probably be dragged into local politics that determines which venues get what matches etc. c) A whole new set of player contracts will probably have to be drawn up. So, if the administrators can figure a way to overcome the disadvantages, I think we have a winner here.
Thanks.

Sounds good but what about...

Very good idea and thought put forward by Mr. May. But the main concern is how are we going to hold certain matches. NZ is reluctant to come to pakistan. India does not want to play with pakistan. England does not want to go to Zimbabwe or Kenya. Kenya might not want to go to England. Pakistan not wanting to play with India and so on...
I for one do not want to see a whole lot of points just forfeited and see Kenya as ODI champions!!

Announce in the beginning itself. If any country doesnt plays in any other country, fine them maximum points, maximum fine interms of financial and if the country doesnt particiapte in more than 75% of the matches in the Year, that team will be automatically disqualified from the Leugue.

Its ICC that should frame these rules. I thought that ICC was very liberal to England and NZ in the world Cup. They =should have barred from WC immediately

I like this Idea

I like this idea. The present one day cricket should be like English Primiere leugue and each team should play other team three times, ( one in in their own homeland, one in other's home land and other in a neutral venue, May be shrjah will be a good Neutral venue, to be fair to all teams) and you can have 2 points if you win ur home land , 4 points if you win in foreign country and 6 points if you win in neutral Venue. Finally choose 8 teams from this leaugue. No finals , no semi fianls. All round robin leugues. The team which wins most matches will be named as the Best TEam of the Year. Its a beutiful idea.

We are bored of long oneday series(recent AUS-WI series), nonsiginificant series (Series in Dhaka, SL, Morocoo). And nobody is going to benefit from the next coming AUS-Bangaldesh Series.

Good Idea

The idea seems very good. In due time it would need to undergo minor changes but the concept of having a purpose larger than that game itslef for every one day game seems exciting.
