If the ratings takes the previous years into account, then why do we need a world cup. Suppose India had won the world cup, what would've been its ratings then? Questions with probably no answer. I thought the world cup decides whose the best and whose not. then why not go in the world cup order with Australia as no. 1, India no.2 etc?
Totally agree with Ganguly's observation with the ICC latest ODI ranking. It's absolutely strange and has no logic. It's high time the top bosses in the ICC stops coming out with statistics and ranks which has no sense
If you read the explanation of the ranking system given at the official ICC site, you will find a lot of flaws in the system. Hardcoding of values, for instance 40 points for defining the gap between strong and weak teams and then assigning points 10 and 90 for wins and losses, plus the weighting system of 1/3rd and 2/3rd, is all absurd. This creates a bias since all teams don't play against all the rest of the teams and the above method does not take this into picture. A system which can be fool-proof needs to be built which takes into picture a rolling window of maybe a 1-year or 2-year period. The method for calculation of ranking whould be EWMA or exponentially weighted moving average where the weights keep on decreasing with time consistently. Hopefully ICC changes its current ranking system.
I feel, it is a poor ODI rating procedures by ICC. I think, it's better to add "CURRENTLY Playing Cricket Ratings" for these ratings, which would be suffice for atleast justifying India has thrown back spotting at #8.
