Smith split wide open
by kunjal on Jul 16, 2003 08:41 PM

Aww !! Give the guy some time dude. Its early days. Today we hail ganguly as one of the best captains. But even he struggled initially as a captain. Its not that the captain can overnight turn the fortunes. If stastics are a critreon then sachin should be captain of india and he was but his records speaks for itself. When a lot of senior and seasoned players retire the team will suffer and will go through a temporary phase where it will struggle. Although i will admit that so far smith hasnt been impressive with his captaincy. But it will be fair to give the guy a prolonged run to prove himself.

the absence fo lance and jonty is showing.southafrican cricket is on a slow decline since cronje has left.now any team in the world has a decent chance againt them.the new talents are also not having much of an impact including the captain.Graeme "learn to bat first then lead the side"yes englandd is a much better side now.i am right now in uk and people are very happy about the way their team is playing.good luck southafricayou need it because u dont have lance to create miracle victories any more nor jonty to take those catches

get smith out!!
by jenny on Jul 16, 2003 10:25 AM

grame smih wasnt even selected in the worl cup squad of 16...originally...happened to enter coz of sumone's injury...such a player obviously doesnt deserve to hold a place in the squad...forget the captaincy....in fact coz of grame smith...ppl like gary kirsten and lance klusesner are out of the team...which is indeed a pity.....
sumthing needs to done soon....sumone like shaun pollock or even mark boucher could take over the captaincy which'll augurwell for the future of south african cricket

statistics for captaincy
by manish on Jul 16, 2003 12:52 AM

if only statistics were to be considered for giving the post to captain a side then tendulkar should captain india, instead of ganguly, other things also matters due to which tendulkar stteped outand for same reasons pollock was made to step down.

Pollock and Kallis should be the leaders of SA team
by Suresh Pillai on Jul 15, 2003 11:13 PM  | Hide replies

If I were the chairman of selectors of SA, I would make the best players in the side ,the leaders of the team . Shaun Pollock should be the captain and Kallis should be made the vice captain since these are the only 2 players who are guaranteed of their positions in the 2007 world cup ! Also these are the only 2 folks who could lead the team by example , in the batting/bowling and fielding

i guess thats the reason u r NOT the chairman of the SA cricket. it would be interesting to see how u would have fared had u been in graeme smith's position.
basically ,i think that smith has done well and can improve with time and experience. he is so young and therefore needs some amount of consideration from his fans. so lets just stop criticising him and give him some time to prove himself.

I think in the article, it says that pollock as a captain never faltered, and was sacked for no fault of this. On the other hand, smith is nothing special as a captain.
