Why this aversion on thepart of Ms Panicker & Co to have questions raised about credentials of those that have not been distinguished by good performances but have taken irresposible liberties in questioning one who has at least shown sincerity in efforts if not anything else

There is no harm in critising your own people. One should take that in a right sense that after all you are critised by your countryman rather than being critised for these kind of silly activities by our captain by foreign journalists. Mind you, if the foreign journalists review on this issue it will be more damaging & intolerable to read even. Then one should also remember that the journalists are not there only to pour praises on whatever our captain or our team members are doing. They, the players have to be critised when they do wrong things just like they are appreciated when they do great things.

ganguly's response
by Vijay on Feb 04, 2003 11:43 PM

As you suggest, it is part of a larger logical fallacy. What should be considered is the statement and not who is saying it. For example: if a habitual liar says that '2+2=4', the statement does not become false. Crowe's statements should be considered on their merit. Why should we ascribe an ulterior motive, when what he is saying is correct?

If Ganguly continues in the state of denial he is in currently, and being defensive on the top of it, we can kiss our chances good-bye.

Prem,
you are full of it. Change yourself, the negativity in Indian Journalism is like termite.
You Indian journalist are the only one who criticise their own.
One himself doesnt become big just by dragging down others. Shame on you

Cricketers from Down Under are renowned for their sledging skills. But just like he pioneered the concept of the pinch hitter and opening the bowling with a spinner at the '92 World Cup (remember Dipak Patel?), the former Kiwi captain seems to have pulled another rabbit out of his hat with this new tactic of off the field sledging. And it has come right in time for the World Cup.
That apart I guess the person in charge of India's national cricket team needs to be much more mentally stronger than Saurav Ganguly currently is. For all the disgrace he met with, one thing admirable abt Md. Azharudding during his tenure as captain was how he could would maintain his cool, even in the face of the fiercest barrage of criticism. Seems like Ganguly needs a few lessons from the disgraced former India captain and master batsman. One thing he must realise is that the more he reacts to such provocative statements and crusades the more vulnerable he will become to more such attacks. On the contrary if he steels himself mentally and lets his exploits do the talking, he would have gone a long way in silencing his critics. He is the butt of ridicule for his running between the wickets and at times for his fielding. If he can concentrate on those two areas and shut out all other comments he will emerge a much more complete and consequently more successful cricketer.

Don't Duck it. Hit if for 6!
by Abs on Jan 20, 2003 03:11 AM

Hi Prem,
I am an avid reader of your columns. But this time I disagree with your opinion. Ganguly is justified to questions crowe's right to make personal comments in the same way as us questioning pakistans motive and right in raking up gujrat issue when minorities in their own backyard suffer.
Ganguly beats crowe records as a captain and should crow about crowe's remarks. However I feel rather than to question commitment to the game, like crowe and ganguly indulge in, time should be spent correcting or commenting on mistakes and technique on field instead of penning or karoke'ing each others record. Its childish to bait on each others record. But one has to side with ganguly's reply. Lets not duck the bouncer when u can hit for a six!
