Banter vs Sledging
by Rohit Sharma on Aug 03, 2003 05:20 AM

I remember Derek Randall as a cool unassuming though imaginatively funny man on the field - if you take an avg of 2 1/2 days of fielding - he was smart to make it enjoyable to himself, all players, and spectators as well. I wish there were more like him today. Gavaskar's mock bowling Qadir style, Tony Grieg's antics on the ground were original and funny. Arrogance and hautiness spoil the treat of good old fun and games whereas genuine humour adds to the excitement of the game.

The Sledging
by pranaydandia on Aug 02, 2003 08:22 PM

Are there any ways to suggest what will be considered as sledging and what will be considered as plain banter.

The decision is very subjective and can bring a lot of controversies as what is sledging and what is not.

And why not sledge. Everything is fair in Love war and games. I am not saying sports out here for a specific reason, which I will touch upon later.

Let me step back into history and realize what games were supposed to do. They were played so that each unit could get the vicarious pleasure of defeating the other side in a war . THe thrill that one gets after winning a game is of the same kind that one gets after winning a war--- . And once the unit has experienced the thrill of winning , one can go back to peaceful times . The chances of war between sporting parties will be lesser to that extent.

The idea is that we should get as close to war in sporting events, so that we do not engage in real war.

And, If it helps in winning a war err.... game , lets sledge.

i dont agree with gavaskar. sleding is an important part of todays game when there is so much at stake. if my sledging makes me win and lands me a 100 crore deal like sachin, y wouldnt i sledge? the point is mordern cricket has to much at stake. its after all a mans game and you are playing at the highest level you cant except things to be sweet out there.

no way,

sunny bhai this time you are wrong, just because you have targeted austrailians there is no right you to say that indian players do indulge in this type of activities. just because you want to show the cricketing world that you are not partial to your country you cannot make the statement without any reason. i am great fan of my team but never i have seen indulging in such activities
