india had and has fast bowlers but talent is not tapped
by ati on Aug 04, 2004 08:20 PM

who says we have not produced genuine quick bowlers. We have produced srinath who is the fastest bowler we have produced since mohammed nissar. In his prime he consistently bowled in excess of 150 km/hr and was the fastest bowler in the world for six long years. He was clocked at 156 km/hr when bowling with injury in 1997.We have also produced c.rangachari, a genuine quick bowler in the late 1940s who clean bowled don bradman for a duck. Also we had produced pandurang salgaonkar and mehallasha pavri who were really quick.since fast bowling is not given importance in india many genuine fast bowlers ran into obscurity.Anything physical act which reqires strength is thought to be incapable among indian standards.this is pure sterotyping. We should change our attitude.Because pakistan changed their attitude, they produced quick bowlers, imran khan being their first genuine fast bowler. In the future I at least have the hope that world cricket will produce pacemen who bowl at 140 mph(225 km/hr) and that couple of them are from india. This will all be possible because of evolution.

SORRY SELECTION LOGIC.
by AMJAD A PESHIMAM on Apr 18, 2003 03:46 PM

I feel really sorry for Wasim Jaffer, even though after proving himself year by year and always amongs the top batsmen list not getting the right opportunity. Where every batsmen fail on the westindies tour he manage to score 2 fifties. Many player get their place cemented on indian team just because they get the opportunity against the weaker team. I hope the selector will also consider the opposition while selecting the team and not select only on the basis of averages...and help our Indian team to come out of the second number after australia or else we will beat all the team except the top team and can reach the maximum the second slot..

Re: K Ananth (kerala)

K Ananthapadmanabhan has been such a consistent performer over the years. He, in my opinion is the best leg spinner in the country, and age should not be a factor in choosing him for national reckoning

Derth of genuine pace bowlers
by Aniruddha Roy on Apr 14, 2003 02:56 PM

Its quite a sad story in India that we lack genuine quick bowlers. In the past also, we never had genuine quickies. Even in the present team, Zahir & Nehra don't ever cross the 145 km/hr mark. If country like Pakistan, with pitches similar to India, cam produce lightning speed bowlers like Shoab Akhtar & Wasim Akram, not to mention Imran Khan, Tahir Naqqash & Azim Hafiz in the past, why can't we ? I think the BCCI, and the Sports Ministry should look into this aspect, and talented players from the Pace Foundations, and other bodies should be sent to English counties and the Australia leagues for training & experince. A major problem is also due to the attitude of the trainers, most of them are former bowlers, in the medium pace categories. Indian pace attack never had the venoum in their attack, and never even thought of terrorising the batsman by bowling shortpitches, bouncers, and inswinging yorkers. So, what will they teach the yongsters ? We do have talent in the country, but should be nurtured properly. We have always produces World Class batsman, with sustained performances. But, never produced genuine fast bowlers. We have improved in all the areas of the game, except of this. Though Zahir & Nehra have been showing improvements, but were exposed in the World Cup Finals. If we now have one or two fast bowlers in the team now, we can do become a Giant Killer, and a super power in International Cricket.

Hirwani
by prashant on Apr 08, 2003 02:18 AM

It is not a bad idea to include Hirwani in either Indian side or India "A" side with Amit Mishra so that a trend of wrist spinners comes back which helps in overseas tours. How it is to be worked out, is selectors' job.

by santosh on Apr 05, 2003 07:59 PM

one cannot forget hirwanis magical spell against the westindies at chennai.if there was one player who was not given his due it is hirwani.hirwani is a magnificient spinner and a potential matchwinner.he should be given another chance and we shouldnt miss a opportunity to see this person vanish without a trace.
