The greatest in terms of sheer numbers, Federer ranks as the greatest player of all time. Sparkling and long, the records - he has won the most number of Grand Slams (17), spent the most number of weeks as No. 1 (302), snared the most consecutive final wins (24), to list a few - speak for themselves.

But to evoke Federer's greatness in only numbers would be to overlook his genius. No player as graceful, no player with a better footwork, no player with a more sweeping all court game has ever held a tennis racquet. Federer socks the ball as hard as any other player.

The difference is that while the brute power of competitors is flagrant, Federer's strokes are masked in beauty. You won't hear a grunt from him. You might have to strain to catch a drop of sweat on him. The forehands are released with a spring of step reminiscent of a ballerina.

His one-handed backhand is vintage. He covers the court as effortlessly as an ice skater. His changes in pace and spin are subtle. The impossible angles of returns elicit 'oohs' and 'ahs' from the fan and the non-partisan alike.

In other words, Federer's game is sublime; his competitors' are stiff. That, to his legion of acolytes, is what makes him the supreme tennis player. And the greatest.

This was relevant in 2005.Not anymore. Nowadays even the Posposils make him sweat. The days of effortlessly beating the fading stars like Hewitt Safin and Roddick are long gone....

In another 6 years time, Anuraug Rathor will wriote the same thing about his now hero Nadal. At that time a XXXXX will be his favorite player. Mr AR will not give credit where it is due and call names at those who do it.

Come on AR, as I said you are re-christening me with a new name !! Your post shows you are scared of Djoko and Delpo !! I never mentioned any names and I said after 6 years... You think your favourite player will win for another decade. I never said it. Accept the fact that Roger Federer is a great player and Nadal, Djoko, Murray all admire him.

Routhoure, I also can be abusive more than you but I come from a good family which enjoys good and CLEAN sports. I am not against any sportsman and do not write down anybody, as long as he/she plays the game honestly. For me, Nadal, Djoko, Delpo, Devvarman are good sportsmen and I always respect talent whoever has it (unlike you !!)

Ramadorkan...if you all FedUp fans would give credit where it was due,all these exchanges wouldn't ever take place.Talking about an xxxxx being a favorite player, that sounds familiar to you doesnt it?I mean, you guys were all default Djoko fans when he was beating Nadal, and now with 1 win in 4 years against Nadal DelPotro is your new hero!!!
