He is unsung hero of Indian sports. Since chess is not popular with masses Anand did not get the same adulation as other sports persons. He deserves Bharata Ratna and nomination to rajya Sabha

Bharat Rathna to some is to appease sombody's ego, while Rajya Sabha membership is placing a Honourable man along with thieves/rowdies/crooks/aanimals.
So no need of the same for ANAND.

The question is - why is chess not popular with the masses? This is the birthplace of chess.

In the Indian Sports history Anand is the greatest Sportsperson and no one from any other sports arena can even remotely match his talent, caliber or even his level of achievement. He is the only one who deserves to be honoured with the highest order of recognition in India. he has no parallel nor any there now or expected to reach his level of achievement.

For Vishy Anand is very much on cards if he continues the way he is playing for another 3-4 years.

I would argue that he belongs to the world and not only to India. Chess is more of anIndividualGame and unlessAnand contributesMore to preparingTalentsIn India, IdontConsider himTo beSuch AnIndianHero, althoughWe admireHim. BobbyFischer wasThe BestAmerican player and wonA coldWarStyle WC, and yetAfter himMost AmericanGMs are imported. FischerDid notDo anything to promoteChess inAmerica, and compareThat to BottvinikWho spentAll hisLife teachingChess. AndAmerican isFar aheadOf us inGroomingTalent. IndiansAre veryShallowMinded andDoNot admireArtMusicScienceOrChess - unless ArtAndScience takesTheFormOf BollywoodDhamaka. InThat senseI feelAnand shouldDo muchMore toPromoteChess inIndia. AlreadyHeDid quiteA bitButNotEnough. PeopleWere InspiredByHim, butIt isGoing toCollapse asSoon asHeLoses hisCrown. Interestingly Fischer's winDid moreTo encourageA youngGeneration of RussianPlayers - I thinkIf AnandDoesNot doMore toEncourage youngstersHere ChineseWill beMoreInspiredThanIndians.

I disagree. Its the performance that matters. As you said chess is an individual game and people have to get groomed individually. How many trainers did Anand had in his young days?

The curse with average indians is that they dont respect or accept extraordinary talent. Always want to find fault with something or other unrelated characteristics. Please raise above mediocrity and appreciate true merit and excellence.

Anand is an undisputed champion and he is nevertheless a great INDIAN sportsperson.

Admittedly he is a great champion - I am not criticizing him as a chess player. All I am saying is that he has not done enough - and of course it is his choice only. You are taking exceptions to my comments - please look at Botvinnik and Karpov's stories. They worked stringently to promote Russian chess and Russia has been in pole position for a long time. Anand's genius is not in question, I would like him to contribute more to the teaching and development of chess than sporting a NIIT teaShirt.

This is exactly my point that Anand need not have to do anything for development of chess in India because his presence at the highest level should be motivation enough for other aspirants. Nobel laurates dont necessarily share their secrets to other scientists for them to get nobel prizes. Its just the same way. All the international matches are well documented and there are resoruces in internet and books that were unheard of when Anand started playing chess.

I think Anand has been visiting, meeting and sharing his experiences back home enough and quite often. He has a professional second rung of Indian chess player under him as well. Thats more than adequate for someone to latch on and excel.

Its a pity that Anand is unable to establish a base in India and work on his game. Its not his fault unlike the Russians. You cant develop the game in a country if you dont have the opportunity to live there. And its extremely impractical for Anand to live in Chennai with no infrastructure ( such as having seconds and other trainers ) and play all his tournaments in Europe. Whenever he visits Chennai he does visit age group tournaments, delivers talks to motivate children and youngsters. Hie tried desperately for a sponsor in India for his match against Topalov and found none. The single biggest reason why his influence hasnt been greater in India that what it is is that his matches have never been telecast in the country live with commentators to educate the public. This is not a naach gaana sport that anyone can follow without education and our bollywoodised tv channels cant spare a minute for him.

There is a Proverb in Tamil,ie "Prepared food & told advice only for three days". That means your fate lies in your interest, hard work, enthusiasm, aim to what you want to be in life.
It will not come easy or from others.
When all flights is cancelled he travelled 36 hours in car & won the C'ship.

my best game of vishy anand is his win over karjakin in wijk aan zee (2006) , featuring double piece sacrifice to develop extreme weakness in karjakin's position and finally involving a mating net.

His fifth game with black in the WC match against Kramnik . That tactical shot was so immense that still today Vlad gets scared when he faces Anand.

The notable thing about Anand is his fluency with all formats of the game, the normal version, rapid version, and even playing against the computer. In that sense he is a good student of the game.
Possibly the only regret he may have is not being able to beat the reigning champion Kasparov, despite coming so close.
