That is very sad.

Make sure we drive safe. Do not drink and drive. Do not drive when you are sleepy.

It can be a matter of life and death.

Don't rush. Leave 15 mins early if you want to be some place at a specific time.

These are very small things that can have a huge impact.

I sincerely doubt if any one of our politicians(present) would be remembered, unless until they are goaded down our throats.

We need a fundamental change. India is too big a country to function as a parliamentary democracy. it works for Britan which as big as Kerala.

We need a decentralized governance system where states have more powers to implement laws based on their local values and the central government's role is limted to Defense, Immigration and maybe a couple of more things. Thats all.

Central planning for 1.2 BILLION people is a recepie for disaster.

It is humanly IMPOSSIBLE.

Why are we so hell bent on having a Nany government ?

Are we incapable of taking care of ourselves ?

Most of our problems are created or made worse by the intervention of government,
- Infrastructure
- Population
- Pollution
- Corruption

The government has just made matters worse.

Our reliance on government to solve even the simplest of challenges is the root cause why we continue to be a "developing nation" for the past 30 years.

We are great at identifying a problem, blaming others and then doing nothing.

Countries and nations prosper because they have a mindset that offers solutions to problems.

That is the fundamental change we need as Indians.

When we see garbage in our neighbourhood, lets stop looking for government help. Lets organize a community drive on Sat/Sun to clean up the place and maintain it.

Its high time we take ownership of this country. It is afterall OUR country.

I think its a very sensible suggestion. This is OUR country, city, area and neighbourhood. We are responcible for it and WE should take care of it. We know the culture better, our needs better than anyone. If we as a common citizen feel the power is with us we can control things. If we dont do it ourselves we should not blame any one.

but according to me Indira Gandhi (despite the emergency) was a true leader who showed what we are capable of doing in the world. Even mr. vajpayee has admired her during the bangladesh war...

Well we produced an individual who was is an inspiration to Mr. Mandela himself. He was Mr. Gandhi.

Look who we have ignored him and his teachings.

Lets not blame the politicians. They just an ugly reflection of us.

Unless we get our priorities correct nothing will change.

We are more interested in Flash news, stupid bollywood and Cricket.

We have more pressing challenges as a nation.

In 1998-99 Mr. vajpayee came up with two defining ideas Gloden Quadilateral and Interlinking of Rivers. Two federal decisions with vision of changing India. Rivers project was sidelined today after ten years we face drought and floods so many parts of india. Road project with congress in power has been put on tortoise pace as the party itself .
Federal Decisions have to be taken with atleast 25 years ahead in time and we make only decisions of next 25 day or few months .

Panjak,
Why do we need centralized planning ?

Why don't we let states decide their own infrastructure projects ?

The closer to the problem you are, the more effective will be the solution.

The central government does not know what is good for KA. The people of KA are better equipped to make their own decisions.

The central government can just lay down standards for roads, airports, etc. Let the states decide their own priorities.

Because people have more influence on state governments. There is relatively more accountabilty compared to central government.

Central government only cares about UP, MP, MH, KA and a select few other states. Thats all they need to be in power.

I would advocate that we let states decide what projects they want to work on. States will work with other states to facilitate movement and utilization of other natural resources.

You are right in that way , my only contention was that then centre should facilitate between states as we have seen in our past that states normally only fight over rivers and other natural resources.
I completely agree with you on centre caring about big states .If in 1947 we had embraced northeastern states as our own and developed them , i am sure more people would have gone their than they goto europe. We have neglected our smaller states to the extent that they are feel ailnated .
