Chess is a mind game. That doesn't make it a game for intellectuals. "Intellectuals" are no more predisposed to play this game than are ordinary folks.
Success in any form of sport requires special intelligence, be it cricket, or football, or tennis, or F1 racing. Chess just doesn't have a visible physical aspect to it. Doesn't mean that there is nothing physical -- adrenaline flows as much as in any other competitive sport, probably more. And chess players lose as much weight during a tournament as do other types of players.
