Yes, we cannot compare their lifetime achievements. But today it is only Rafa who can consistently compete and beat Federer. Federer played amazing tennis in the final, but things may have been different had he seen Rafa on the other side of the net. Rafa has a long way to go in his career...but on current form they both are comparable.

Yes Ravi Iyer, Nadal has a long way to go in his career. But, will his knee and body hold up? That is the million dollar question. The type of physical game that Nadal plays is already telling on his body and the troublesome knee is just the beginning. Being basically a retriever, Nadal needs strong legs and knees. All the running on the clay courts of Europe is slowly catching up with Nadal.

Yes, I agree. He has to look out for potential burnout. Federer has loads of natural talent while Rafa puts in lot of hardwork and altheticism in his game. So, he has to watch out for his fitness. Of course, he has lot of determination and stamina especially in the long matches. But how long can he sustain is the point.

FEDEX the undisputed!!
by manoj krishnamachar on Jun 08, 2009 01:01 PM

It took pete sampras 12 years to achieve 14 slams!
It has taken just 6 years for FEDEX to achieve that!!
PETE never reached the finals of Roland garros!
FEDEX has done it 4 times !!
Fedex is arguably the best!!

rod laver won 11 GS but in his days us and aussie open were on grass .
sampras reached french final only once.
so obviously federer is greatest.

nadal will never b able to win more GS than roger.
he is still in doubt for wimbledon.

You cannot compare tennis players of different ages and say who's the greatest. If Laver won 11 (remember he won 2 GS, no one has done that), he was still competing against players of his calibre like Emerson, Rosewall, etc. Also, he played his tennis for many years before the Open Era. Unlike Federer who only has one real competitor. I am not trying to take away the credit from Roger's achievements but at the same time I would like to say you cannot say that Federer is greater than Laver os Sampras. No comparison between players of different eras. The way the game is played is different, the surfaces have changed, the technology of racquets have changed, the coaching and exposure has changed.

Federer is Lucky !
by Toby Maguire on Jun 08, 2009 12:08 PM  | Hide replies

Pete managed to win 14 grand slams against the likes of Becker,Edberg,Agassi,Courier,Chang,Goran,Rafter,Muster,Kuerten,Krajicek,Rios to name a few...

most of the players mentioned above were ranked No 1 or atleast in the top 3 at some point of time so what sampras achieved was PHENOMENAL !

As for federer, other than rafa and roddick, djokowich, safin to an extent the competition pales....so he's been hugely lucky

it is not fed fault that these players are not playing now. red has beaten sampras , agassi, rafa, safin, hewet, roddick but such is fed dominance that others did get a chance to be the number one . even pete said today that fed the best in history of tennis, then why u r crying denying it

When Sampras played their were senior players already for him like Becker,Edberg etc. Also he let players like Agassi, Courier, Chang etc to compete him. But Federer never allowed anyone to reach the no.1 spot except Rafa. Competition was always the same or better but Roger's level is always above excellence.

I would prefer Sampras to Federer anytime as Sampras was just Sampras....
But Federer is also a darling and perhaps overall better player than Sampras. Heres some scores to get your stats right..

Federer - Sampras 1 - 0
Federer - Agassi 8 - 3
Federer - Ivanisevic 2 - 0
Federer - Krajicek 2 - 0
Federer - Rios 2 - 0

sports are like that. when some one dominates or when someone is way above the others it becomes boring . do u remember those days when martina and then later graf used to play . they used to dominate so much that other hardly used to win any tournment. and look at now , at each tournment u get a different player and we have a new number 1

Rafa started with Chennai open in 2007 & 2008. Those 2 years were good for him. He skipped India (Chennai Open) this time and luck is not favouring him. May be he should return to Chennai open again in 2010.

If you compare such sort of statistics, there will be never an end. Then what about Federer appearance of 19 grand slam finals, has Sampras ever reached that many? Of the last 15 Grandslams he has reached 14 grandslam finals, can Sampras boast of such statistics? We should be proud, that we are witnessing an all time great.

I know is is getting increasing difficult for you to digest the fact that Federer has won the French Open and that he is being hailed as the Greatest Ever Tennis Player. Watching Nadal plays reminded me of Jim Courier. There game are so similar. They achieved initial success, but later on faded, coz they didn't have style. Both are hard hitters, that in stamina absorbing game like tennis, u need to conserve your energy to succeed at highest level. Federer has time and again proved that but look at Nadal. He is already suffering from exhaustion. Just mark my words, he will meet the same fate as that of Jim Courier. In another year or 2, you will see Nadal nowhere in top 10 or probably in Top 50. In sports, it is ultimately the win that matters, and come on he defeated the player who beat your fav player Nadal. So don't dis credit the efforts of Soderling (the giant slayer).

After French Open title, Sampras calls Federer 'the greatest eve
by Anurag Rathore on Jun 08, 2009 11:54 AM  | Hide replies

"What he's done over the past five years has never, ever been done — and probably will never, ever happen again," Sampras said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Regardless if he won there or not, he goes down as the greatest ever. This just confirms it."

"I'm obviously happy for Roger," Sampras said. "If there's anyone that deserves it, it's Roger. He's come so close."

"He just is a great, great player that is a credit to the sport and is a positive influence for young kids and just tennis in general," Sampras said. "It looks pretty tough to beat now with 14 majors, and I'm sure he's going to go on and win a lot more."

Anurag,

Sampras is the right person to judge who is best, all others who never ever had played Tennis too commenting lot.
But Sampras with 14 Grand Slam and not a French Open in it, is so far regarded as the best for the achievement made, along with other Great Players.
As Federer said this victory took off lot of pressure from him, we can expect few more titles to his already glittering career.
