Brilliant tournament!!
by David Coverdale on Jun 30, 2008 03:40 PM  | Hide replies

Highly entertaining, brilliant and vintage soccer was exhibited by teams like Spain, Germany, Turkey and Russia....4 of the best teams made it to semis...teams with a negative mindset like Italy were eliminated....if Italy are to defend their WC crown in 2010, they will have to attack more and curb their defensive mentality..

My favourites for 2010 WC in a couple of years time are now as follows :

1) Brazil(always eternal favourites for sheer class)
2) Spain(talent, discipline and innovation)
3) Germany(Bulldog fighting spirit and greats like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose)
4) Italy(greatest defence plus Gigi Buffon will be around for a couple of years more)
5) England(will be surprise packet of 2010 WC in South Africa)

Besides these 5 teams, i seriously don't see a chance for any other team...France are ageing and they will take atleast 3 to 4 more years to rebuild....Holland and Portugal always choke at the big stage...

Cheers!!

I don't consider Argentina as a quality team...they are a substandard club level team!! Even teams like Austria and Poland will beat them!!

Past is past Mr. Kaushik
by Abhijit on Jun 30, 2008 02:06 PM

My father was not same in every behavior and appearance as my son. Different Generations have different views on everything. They solve problems in their own way.

Change occurs every time, and never can we keep on praising the past as some old now do. Past is past.

History means history of past. The present is important. Simply praising the past, that too a failed attempt seems to be foolishness.

Hail the deeds of today’s heroes!

MEANINGLESS

What's worth of knowing this ? Is my country playing? Do Americans show any interest in Cricket? They even don't bother to include cricket in Olympicis in spite of the fact that the game is believed to the religion of millions of people in this part of the world. In stead they prefer beach-vollyball to cricket!!!

The comment itself is meaningless.International Football is way ahead from all other sports. It show cases all the quality human traits:team-work,individual skill, disciplined combat and goal-getting performance. The huge popularity of football is indepndent of "american interest" or "olympic recognition".The frustration of people who lost their prowess to play hockey and seeking consolation in cricket is understandable but can not be encouraged.

Kudos Espaniola!
by Srinivasan Krishna on Jun 30, 2008 12:31 PM

Spain has been the perpetual underachievers! Their counterparts are Mexico in the Americas.

This time around they realy played to their potential and lifted the Euro 2008!

The current German side is a very very lucky side! They were thrashed by croatia in the Group stages, Scrapped past the gifted Portugese, who very unfortunately had a weak link in defense. In the Semi-Finals, the fact is the better team lost( Turkey).

Finally, their limitations showed up against Spain & their solid defense through Ramos, Puyol, Iniesta & Silva with Senna falling back to effect many a steal from the German forwards.
Germans were really scrappy in defense & i thought they had at least two near penalties overlooked by the refree. The behavior of the Germans especially with the refree was reprehensible.

Italy without Cannavaro & Maldini still had good defense! Today the Spanish defense looks the best closely followed by the Brazilians.

Despite the absence of David Villa and a fewgreats who were not even in the squad, Spain finally came good!

Ole ! Ole ! Espaniola!

SPAIN DESERVING WINNERS
by Venugopalan on Jun 30, 2008 12:15 PM

Spain was only unbeaten team in the tournament. They richly deserved the title. The Germans simply could not keep the momentum and lost to a much better side. Viva Spain.
