"His victory has underscored that the best that an Indian sportsman can do is to avoid the authorities and eschew governmental patronage, which seldom comes without strings attached" It is true but Bindra could afford without governmental patronage, can others do?

FYI IN OLYMPIC BINDRA IS TREATED AS AN INDIAN NOT SIKH. IN THE MEDAL TALLY SHEET AN INDIAN HAS WON THE MEDAL NOT SIKH/HINDU/MUSLIM......SO DON'T TRY TO CREATE FRICTION BETWEEN HINDUS & SIKHS.FIRST OF ALL WE ARE AN INDIAN.

For your information Sikhs are sons of hindus only. one person from each hindu family was taken to make the sikh panth to combat invaders.

I dont understand this argument on hinduism & sikhs and for that matter on any RELIGION. We are talking about a sporting brilliance whose roots are in attributes like focus, patience, training, concentration, sacrifice & long training. And all these attributes are there in MOST RELIGIONS , except that some religions want following and power based on numbers. Please celebrate Abhinav Bindra's victory as an Indian victory and as Abhinav said, lets hope that it will revolutionize Indian attitude towards all other SPORTS and also I hope Indians will STOP thier maniacal folowing of cricket...wherein India is still 3rd or 4th in ranking, inspite of only a handful of nations playing it!!! Lets wake up my fellow Indians. Jai Hind.

u should be sent out of india u fool.its a country's victory.
how one person can represent the whole confident generation...its silly to say....one in 1.2 billion get a gold medal then wether generation become confident and if 40 years back they were winning hockey gold they were not confident...what the hell...they should atleast think for a minute for choosing headlines...these journalist have become so cheap..not any standard......yes its a great personal acheivement that first individua;l gold to be won in olympics and it becomes great acheivement when u belong to such a big country and you are the only one to bring gold and thts for first time....its really scary acheivemnt...but its not any joy for generation...see medal tally and compare the rank with the population talyy....still shameful...compare indian girls with chinese or americna girls...all are full of fats atound tummy and every possible part of body...do something indians except eat and do bakwaas.

i completely agree, REdiff (SHeila) please choose your words apporopriately, not one article was written when he was preparing for the olympics let alone when he won numerous accolades for various championships, and now suddenly he represents a self confident generation!
now govt already gave him 1 crore, bungalow and all that..this is the end of Abhinav's sporting career for sure...i am sure he won't be motivated now...these idiotic Indian govt and corporates keeps spoiling cricketers and sporstsmen like this...India should win atleast 3 medals now otherwise its a waste..lets start seeing Indian contribution in Olympics as a whole and not rest on individual achievements..for the next 4 years!! Sigh!!!
Abhinav Bindra created history for our nation by winning Gold Medal at Beijing Olympics. He should be recognized at National Level for which Govt Of India must do something exceptional to Honour him.
Hats off to u abhinav!!! u dont know how proud we feel today...u ve given a great push to india's wheels of fortune n i dont think they r gonna stop that soon...we r all so proud of u...god bless!
i just couldnt help but wonder how one can remain so calm n expressionless in these moments of ecstasy. i was really surprised to see him so composed after winning n at the time he was given his gold medal or even wen they played the national anthem...i wud ve definitely cried out of joy,,i guess anyone wudve done that...but he is a really admirable person...a son every mother would want ...even my mom was sayin that...he must be a gem of a person as well as a shooter now for sure..

the whole world knows what sachin is n they r now soo glad that he isnt what he used to be once...jus coz he has grown a bit old n has a few tired legs...obviously after running on the field n swingin tat huge bat of his for 17 years he has lost tat energy which he once had...but he still has a lot of mettle in him to make bowlers cry for sympathy n to prove ppl like u wrong...he is not a quitter like u..if gandhi was the father of our nation he is our nations son...n ppl like u are its enemies

U just speak like a rotten disgusting Bangladeshi citizen who have no role models and latches on a silly role model and keep glorifying till eternity. Sachin should learn by the examples of Waugh brothers, Hayden and other Australian who retire gracefully. Same for Ganguly.
