Turn the clock back to Marx.If he would have said all the things that he said without 'seizing power' from the capitalists,would he have become that famous ? Come on,right-thinking citizens.We all evolve and ,during evolution, we do somethings which are not necessarily correct.That applies to Hinduism also. Your article itself protrays that he never liked his mother to live long. No affection to his own parents. He was an insincere son. There are many divisions seen in other religions also. Y dint he talk anything about christianity, islam, budhism, etc. U find some reason to marry at the age of 60/70 when most of his trusted friends parted away. This itself sounds that he never carried any value system in his life.
He shud ve chosen a male attendant to help him, y did he choose her to marry? Even today he is talked ill of this issue. DOnt u kno?

What is the message from this article? Does not anyone except for the brahmins worship periyar? You want more followers?? no luck buddy! he was a hypocrite. I don't need to give examples as they have been supplied already by other commenters.
Only 50% of the ideas which Periyar exponed is correct and rational while other activities seem to be opportunisms to quote of something out of the box to attract attention and gain publicity.
I do not know how the director reacts to his garlanding Vinayakar and Rama Idols who were the Gods dearer to Hindus. As the current day politicians I do not know if he would have tried it with other religions. If he had done so, we could have appreciated his equality in thoughts against religions.
I could see him as only a normal person with some reformal thinking and gained publicity because of his capacity to articulate the mass opinion. As we could see in the current day politics of being against God in the Public and and being a devotee in the private. This is nothing but hypocrisy.
Finally, as Hinduism usually does and no other religiion in the world does, we would like to absorb the good things presented by him and leave alone the other.
Current day philosophy is freedom to self to do whatever they wish and advise only to others - let it be Hindi/English learning etc. Forcing their philosophies on the not too aware public and their allow their families to live and enjoy the benefits of those defied to the public.
Periyar was fooling the masses at a time when media Technology was just started growing in India and any freak statement made raised many eyebrows amongst the illeterate masses, there was no one equipped with a strong media medium in order to counter attack his ideology.
He was criticising hinduism because Brhamins were involved, He would never crticise any other religion.
Personally all these people were man in black. Speaking one thing in public and practising one their private life.

Periyar is not fooling people instead he light the fire to think, analyze and reasoning everything objectively. He made significant contribution for Tamil people uplift ment and make thirsty for search of knowledge and practice self respectr . His thought and vision are still relevant to the society (Particulary caste and religion oriented Indian society) and human development. His not simply talk any freak statement to get popular instead, his seeds(ideas) are nurtured and useful fruits for common people and society development. He encouraged asking questions(even media, paper) against him and replying simple manner, which can understood by a common people. Today Tamilnadu status in education, people living conditions, social status , efficiency at work is best comparing to other states of India (Thanks also to Periyar %u201Cfather of Tamilnadu and one of the modern thinkers of India%u201D). Many people misunderstood and thought he was an anti-Hindu and anti-religion, please go through his low cost edition books to understand further about his ideas and principles.
Regarding the Anti-Hindu stand-Once in a public meeting the question raised in front of periyar why are against only on Hindu religion why not other religion Periyar says %u201C My house having lot of junk and garbage. I have to clean it first then I have to come the street for cleaning%u201D As our India/States having 70% of Hindu population so that he replied like this. His life was a open book with black on white. He never speaks public one thing and practice other in private. Present politicians and his successors /followers may do this type double game and duplicate nature. Once he offered chief minister post and he refused it. From the article, it looks like brahmins occupied most of the Govt. posts in early 1900s - It is well known now, how much corruption has crept into the Govt. offices. althrough in the interview, though Rajasekharan boosts about Periyar's way of life and thinking etc. not even a single social achievement done by Periyar is mentined..May I know, what are all the achievements/social reforms Periyar could bring in Tamil Nadu..
If Periyar were such a great character/thinker/social reformer, then today's Politicians of Tamil Nadu do not know anything about the history of Periyar, except that Periyar was against upper casts, athiest and anti-Hindu and idiots like Karunanidhi is clinging on that to gain power...

Woah, Woah .. It was never Periyar vs Tamil Nadu. It has always been Pariyar's Tamil Nadu. Keep that in Mind. If you are not from Tamil N adu I'll think of you as ignorant. But if you are, then I'd like to think of you as stupid.
As it was said in this interview, you only want to retain this stupid opinion about periyar. It is totally upto you though. This is what I would like to think as achievements by periyar.
1. Starting a movement for Social Justice 2. He fought against untouchablitiy 3. Started or Inspired Anti-Hindi Movement 4. A lot more that I don't know of..
Now lets see why the first three points make sense as of today
We have a more socailly equal society in Tamil nadu than elsewhere in the country. Look at all other states and compare the participation of people (people from all castes) from all castes in Schools, Colleges, Government Jobs, All professions, Politics, etc. You could see that it is very widely distributed. Of course it is not perfect, but it is the best in INDIA.
2. His contribution is more than Gandhi's in untouchability. Gandhi could not help those people enter temples. He Did. He is one of the first to support inter caste marriages and was vehemently against superstition. Of course many brahmimns made a living out of other people's superstition was not periyar's fault.
3. Without him Tamil as a language would not be what it is. When I look at Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, etc. I pity marathi, gujarathi and Kannada. More people want to speak hindi and english than their own mother tongues. Learning other languages is welcome but not at the cost of mother tongue. You should always know who you are.
So yeah, PERIYAR is a Great Hero in Tamil Nadu. And if Hero Worship took us this far, then it is not wrong to continue it. Just look at any other state in India where there is no Hero worship and compare that to Tamil Nadu and you could see that Tamil Nadu is lot better.

i am not against any caste or so called aryan dravidian race theory(we all belong to the same genetic makeup) as this has been debunked already, i dont know why people have to become atheists and follow communism to acheive so called social equality, probably i think it is to gain good name and fame and equate themselves to gods. if you read the vedas and shastras there is no mention of castes at all this is all bullshit told by communists and the christian pastors to break the hindu society. if periyar couldnot succeed after 95 years of following his bullshit ideals then he has wasted his entire life and also the lifes of all those individuals who followed him by misleading them into a hell. he has made their life miserable, i am telling this coz even after 95 yrs of his ideals the situation in tamil nadu is still the same.you dont have to go against a particular caste to gain social equality you have to instill confidence in dalits and give them good education and good information about their rights and their freedom , then you got to make the law enforcement as strict as possible if the police dont follow them then suspend them,you have to tell them they are not inferior at all.but alas none of this is done at all by the so called dalit saviours coz if they do this dalits will improve and not follow their stupid ideals. tell me if karunanidhi thinks himself as the saviour of dalits then my simple question is why there is not a dalit chief minister in tamil nadu, why no dalit cm in west bengal and in kerala, atleast congres and bjp are good they dont follow such stupid ideals these are the only two parties where dalits have the highest post in the parties, where as it is not the same in dmk/aiadmk/cpi/cpm . i have to be proud to say that i am from karnataka and we had a dalit cm mr veerappa moily,wgo is such a good educational reformer,also recently maharastra had a dalit cm sushil shinde.if atheists dont believe in god then my question is why do they support islam and christianity it just exposes them and makes them naked ,if someone says i belong to lower caste and dont deserve better life ,then i wouldnot respond to his comment at all coz does it change my life no not at all when all the rules in the constitution support us in upbringing us then just follow them and improve dont heed to the words od upper caste guys.i would like to says one becomes a brahmin,kshatriya and so others by his deeds and not his caste or race,this aryan dravidian race theory is to divide us indians into various races and prevent our development.truth is damn sour when you drink but is good when it heals your mind.
