'Periyar was against Brahminism, not Brahmins'
by S Sumathi on Apr 30, 2007 10:58 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

Periyar is entitled to his views . If Brahmins dominated the bureaucracy, it is because they were used only for manning bureaucracy. They were not entertained in business / commerce. It was the Mauryan king who entrused Brahmins with the task of pursuing knowledge for the benefit of society. To ensure that they single-mindedly focused on knowledge and its pursuit, he set aside a part of the kingdom and constructed dwelling units for the Brahmins there. Such parts were called "Agraharams". To provide them livelihood, the king arranged essential items to be delivered at their doors, free of cost. At best the Brahmins led a hand-to-mouth existence and they never complained against it. They were not exposed to any other calling / trade . Their requirements have always been austere. Thus, one can also say that Brahmins were kept aloof from other trade/calling/profession by the king for selfish reasons. All said and done, even today one can confidently state that the bureaucracy of yesteryears was way ahead of the present-day bureaucracy in terms of efficiency and honesty. Why this difference? The Brahmins dominated the bureaucracy in the good old days. These days Brahmins do not need bureaucratic openings - there are others who value and respect the Brahmins for their hard work , sincerity and brains. A Brahmin may at best knock off a stapler or a pen from the office but will never seek reversal of roles, i.e., the Brahmin employee will never aspire to usurp his employer's wealth by fair means or foul unlike most other communities; nor is the Brahmin violence-prone, thanks to his "satvik" food and disciplined upbringing. The Brahmin is often envied which manifests itself in a hate compaign against him. Why top business houses like Reliance Industries even today hire only Brahmins for their finance jobs, tell me? Surely it is not for reasons of nepotism? How many Brahmins you find in jails? Not much if you consider the percentage. If Brahmins are a despicable lot, why others imitate the Brahmins and would like to be seen as their equals?

i think you have got it right sumathi!
Thanks for voicing out your opinion.

the distinction between brahmins and brahminism is vital. And, people who practise brahminism as lifestyle bring about a positive influence on their environment. It is only fair they are suitably rewarded for the same.

Anybody, who wants to emulate such a lifestyle of austerity, exercises a premium on being process driven, seeks knowledge for the sake of knowledge, believes in satvik food should be a follower of brahminism.

The superiority or inferiority among people is not based on the word 'caste' but should be on 'habits', 'thinking process' and ' applied human values'

As far as Periyar goes, i have never met him and will never meet him. His idealogies probably were an evolved response still relevant today. However, in the name of ' being against brahminism', today what we see is a new set of 'Brahmins'.

In retrospect, he has given brahmins a bad name.
It is not his mistake, it is those people who manage politics who are responsible, who are keen to gain mass popularity through quick fix means. It is those people with no real agenda.

My friend well said, but there are a few things i wish to add to it. Your concept of brahmins holds good only when they are not influences by christian/western culture. I know of brahmins who have come under this influence and committed sins that you have mentioned. It boils down to upbringing and to a lesser extent on the satvik food.
As for others trying to emulate, Yes, we are plain jealous of brahmins and somewhere in the sub conscious mind would want to be like them.
Unfortunately the professions we are in, the upbringing we have had doesnt make it easy to go on satvik diet and thus ends our dream to be like a brahmin. But the dream to become persists and when this dream doesnt get realised, it leads to frustration. And the easiest way to take out this frustration is on the object of your desire, that is brahmins.

His Teacher was so kind with him that he never tried to make brahmin out of him but tought humanity. Dr Ambedkar as the word know is because of his highest inteligence and not bec of his brahmin name. He was strong human right champion. Hello Jawahar Peter, Do you SAi Baba. I think you donot know about sai baba, if you know, immediately you definitely leave Jesus, who tells love one side and eats meats of animals. As posters told that he will give cure to all ailments to the pupils. but there was no evidence. He was killed on a cross, by king. There was no evidence wheter he was came back after his death or not. Okay if he came, he came as a soul. But sai baba, taken one of devotee's ailment and he was dead. This incident about 100 years ago. This was evident by then British Doctors. And after 3 DAYS, he was alive with his body. He was a Muslim, but never told if any body follows muslim, then only i save him. There were lacks of incidents that he saved his devotees after his death, even though they are Hindus or muslims. But what jesus done, if you follows christianity then only he will help you. This is absolutely wrong.

I want to tell one thing to Jawahar Peter, that first know about SAi Baba, read books on Shri Sai Baba. Then i can definitely tell that you automatically, known your self that christianity is the root of cause of todays all problems of the world. Ruled by them and these christians are killing lacks of INNOCENT MUSLIMS on the name of terrorism. And i feel definitely, after knowing about Shri SAi Baba, you will leave jesus and come back to hindism.

The 3% COMMUNITY is stronger than the 97% in terms of intelligence, education, vision and power.

Keep this 3% out from the picture, the whole scene will be full of puzzles and it will be difficult to find the solution.

i am a brahmin. but i want to stress that as per swami vivekanand, all people are born equal. those who can concentrate more in their work, excel. i do not think that a person will be intelligent or fool just because he was born in a particular caste.

but reservations on caste basis should be stopped. ambedkar had suggested reservation on caste basis for 10 years, but it is continuing and increasing with time. if reservations have to be there, let it be on economic criteria. why should a rich person get reservation, just because he is from a particular caste?

thats not the way sree. i m also a brahmin but as i feel equal opportunity should be given to each n every deserving member of the socitey ( most of you will agreenon this. dont u???). But the way our politicians are handling this matter is just heading us for a big social problem in near future. For short term political gains, our leaders are just destroying the social structure. In my opinion we should make education free and compulsoury up to school level for everybody n thn finanical support and necessary training can be imparted to the needy and reservation should be on the basis of economic conditions and not on the basis of the cast, because in todays materiallistic world only one's financial postion or his administrative power (like IAS/IPS/judges etc. ) decides your social status. A poor upper caster is as untouchable to a rich ( be it upper or lower caste)as a lower caster poor. The people who have already benefitted by this reservation system ( in the name of so called social justice ) just want to keep the benefit of this system flowing to their own kids n kins, not to the other deprived section of the society. reservation should be extended only on economical backwardness basis as this is the only parameter in todays society which can define the social status of an individual. I request everybody to come forward and raise their voice to change the system to save our society and country.

How to become brahmin
by mulu on Apr 30, 2007 10:46 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I am not a Brahmin but I am trying to become Brahmin. How they got good reputation? They have learnt Veda so they adopt many good things from Veda. This is a truth. Politicians want vote. Actually, they don%u2019t want to uplift lower castes. Many lower castes convert to other religion after conversion they got better reputation because they have start learning holy books and they adopt many good things. So we should learn Bhagawat Gita and adopt good things then we will get good reputation.
Anybody can become Brahmin
1. Early get up morning and take bath every day
2. Learn Bagawat gita.
3. Avoid non-vegetarian food.
4. Avoid alchohol
If we follow these things definitely we can get good reputation in our society. Reservation is not solution for uplifting us. Knowledge is power. Learn, Learn

Perfectly. Dear Mulu. Bhagwat Gita itself says that division into four castes in based on qualities and actions(guna karma vibhagaso). It is qualities which makes a person Brahmin. Late Dr. Shrikant Jichkar(a former minister of Maharashtra) was a non-Brahmin. But he learnt the vedas, wore the sacred thread and lived his life the Brahmin-way

''Golden'' quotes of EVR aka ''Periyar''
by kumar kn on Apr 30, 2007 10:43 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

'One of the main reasons why there is an upward trend in the prices of clothes and textiles is that women belonging to the Scheduled Castes (Parachies) have started wearing blouses these days. The reason for growing unemployment in society is on account of increasing number of people belonging to Scheduled Castes (Parayans) taking to school education and higher education'.

'The attempt to promote 'temple entry' and 'abolition of untouchability' by the Congress leaders should not result in the tragedy of people belonging to the backward classes getting reduced to the level of scheduled castes. Instead of attempting to raise the status of Scheduled Castes (Parayans), an attempt should not be made to reduce the status of backward Class (Sudrans) by relegating them to the levels of Scheduled Castes. On no account should the existing status of Sudrans be reduced to the level of Parayans'.
