You may not have heard about Raja Rammohan Rai who's efforts resulted in abolishing Sati (first half of 19th century). You may not even heard about Vidyasagar whose effort made Widow marriage legal (middle part of 19th century). Vidyasagar was also staunchly against casteism and would welcome any so called 'untouchable' in his fold. Both these gentlemen came much before Periyar was there and had to withstand opposition of many people. Incidentally both of them were Brahmins. There have been many others who worked towards upliftment of women and weaker sections of the society. But they didn't spread hate towards othere sections of the society (read upper caste) and other part (read anything apart from south India) of the country. 60 years after independence, instead of trying to forget castes we are ressurecting them and people like Periyar are responsible for it. As per his view on his mother's death, it was not objectivity but meanness. He didn't even had the decency to atleast shutup when somebody is dead (a basic phylosophy practiced in all cultures in the world is "show the dead respect"). By his kind of objectivity and materialism people would also turn canibal when a famine sets upon. As people would require food which a human body can provide.

No body told any body to get supressed... just think.... Alll these supressed ppl were happy to be supressed... Who told them to be a slave..Our country became a slave to British becos of our fellow Indians...similarly these became slaves becos of their fellow caste ppl... These stories told so that they can enjoy the benifits now....Without doing any anything they want seats in IIM and IIT based on their supression some 50 yrs back.. As u can see even now they re happy to be supressed, they very happy to be a OBC/SC/ST...afterall they re enjoying a benifits of being the same.
My overall pt, they re happy being a backward class/supressed class....

Yes Yes. u r right. Only this guy "periyar" is great. Gandhiji, Nehru, Patel, Rajaji and every other person lived during that time is idiot. why? because some useless people who don't know anything but to live like parasites(on reservations) think in that way. I forgot , Ambedkar is God and Jagjeevan Ram is a wonderful human being. U have shown lot of wisdom, tolerance and patience and ur understanding on the indian history and our people. TN is the worst state which completely split on caste.... Here the Backward class can file a case against Forward caste, if a Brahmin/FC call him a BC... But they dont mind if they re called BC/MBC/OBC/SC/ST when it comes to reservation..... This kind of attitude is backed up by Periyar, KK, etc... I dunno why they so bothered about Brahminism or Brahmins, they form only 4% of overall population in TN, the problem is all the BC fell supressed by Brahmanis but the fact is they were happy to be supresed and do work for Brahmins...rather than use their own Hardwork for their self improvement.. These ppl re just finding excuse for their Mistakes, by blaming Brahmins... Now they re still blaming Brahmins and getting reservation, even after 100 years from now, they will be telling the same story...

Very Nice Mr. Suresh Kumar for understanding your fellow citizens and for being a proud Indian. I really pity on your parents thinking of how they would feel when you say your FELLOW HUMAN BEING as mother seller and born for a dog and pig. Please take print out of your message and show it to your parents and ask for their opinion. No wonder that they will wack you.
Reservations/quotas etc... are not available to any brahmins these days. Yet they come out with flying colours. I accept the fact that 300 years ago brahmins were like that. But today? i don't see any brahmin insulting a non-brahmin. You can have a good friend in Brahmin if you don't mind that he is a brahmin.
You will Appreciate if you respect fellow beings You will Depreciate if you disrespect follow being.
I hope you can understand that after all we all have same blood and veins and feelings. Stop doing this & start doing something that will appreciate you among the society in which you live in.

I appreciate the knowledge and wisdom of the contributors. I congratulate rediff for bringing us such a lively debate on Hinduism. As many readers pointed out Balkanization of India is a dangerous game played by vested interests. We should stand united and defeat them, otherwise all of us stands loosing the benefits of globalization. Finally atheists are dangerous , mankind is still not evolved to handle such developments.
Although Periyar is entitled to his views, If he was born in Saudi and done some of the things that he did in India to Hindu god's images, I would have been the first to appreciate. After all, Brahmins are a soft target, so he could get away with all the nonsense.

Some time we read in news paper that India is a developing country, India will be a superpower by 2020......but I dont think it will happen only when we will stop taliking on this useless subjects like reservation/Hinduism/Casteism this subjects will definately stop our progress & other countries will take advantage of our internal differences.

You are right dear, except one thing, that is "Barking dogs!!". Why are you calling your own brothers as dogs?? I am confused!! I agree, Lower castes also belong to Hindus. But one thing I want to ask u is "What is the significance of a caste??". Really I am confused with the concept.I am so desperate to know the significance of a caste and use of it.I hope you help me.

Don't talk nonsense. Don't u think u r showing the culture, ur parents have imparted by calling ur fellow beings with names like "dogs" etc. And u know what ur last line after the dots is absoultely right. Brahmins are clever and more intelligent. Any doubts? Want to prove me wrong, fight against reservations, come into open competition and beat the brahmins and then u will have all the right to say that u too r clever and have spine. Prove me if u can. and mind u, i would be very happy if u can do that.

Well said Krishna. These guys have an inferiority complex and our politicians take advantage of this character. There will be a very few guys of the other castes who can match the brahmins in intelligence. That's the HARD FACT. Swallow this guys and STOP abusing the forward castes.. If there are no forward caste, u wont get the reservation, silly fellows.
I can see a number of anti-periyar messages in the string. I believe those who have written them must be brahmins (correct me if im wrong).Ppl..please grow up...periyar was INDEED a great personality....else nobody will be making a film on him. We dont gain anything other than cheap pleasure by blaming him or criticizing his personal habits. We are marching towards a new era. Ppl from all phases & strata are coming up. Whether this is due to Periyar or not its a welcome change, encourage that. Being educated ppl, pls dont put cheap politics and caste system in the fore front. Grow up.

The whole film stuff is a political drama by the DK and DMK thugs and definitely not coz Periyar is great. And you have the nerve to call the anti-periyar sentiments cheap politics?

Bcos of Periyar, Caste based reservation was implemented by political parties in Tamil Nadu. No one can deny that.. Bcos of reservation, many brahmin students (brilliant fellows) could not take up MBBS or BE in Govt and reputed colleges in TN. But this has not left the brahmin guys high and dry. On the contrary, they were forced to take up other courses like science & arts and many of them took up computer science & migrated to US/Australia/Europe.... And they are all living happily. Blame it on the reservation policy, TN is facing the brain drain even now....
What is happenning here? Why are we hurling abuses at each other? Those muslim terrorists are better than us. They are atleast united against non-muslims. Here we hate each other.
