But it had excellant music and Shahrukh. So the movie scraped through and did reasonable.

'Taal'- excellant music and novelty factor about Aishwarya were the movies saving grace or else the movie was as ham and predictable as Akshay Khanna's and Anil Kapoor's ( both of them are actually very good actors) acting and absence of a plot. The movie was an average business NO TAAL was not a hit. But again Subhash Ghai's flair for very good music is very evident in the songs of Taal. Yes Rahman gets the credit but a director chooses what songs to keep. For that matter Khalnayak had some very good numbers too eg."Paalkhi mein ho ke sawaar..."Taal was not something common man could identify with it was something very high-figh.
'Yaadein'(2001) was made for NRIs. Kisna (2005)I have not seen. These two are the most forgettable ones. They both have some good music.
And in the list of forgettables please dont forget "Trimurti". I dont have to say much.

Actually it is not only Subhash Ghai phenomenon. All our movies have kind of become city-centric, for the high flier generation. Fast music and very urbane story theme. Remember such movies are not liked all over the country. But movies about common people ( Lagan, Swades, Bunty-Bubly, Taare Zameen par...) are still loved in urban as well as rural INDIA. Good moviesa have apan India appeal. All of us still have avery chhot-shahar ke mind-set, and would love small towners do well on the screen for a change. Atleast a stor

His movies were working because there was a common thread connecting all his movies....his movies were about common man, common people, people we saw daily. He portrayed things which we could see happening around us. See 'Hero' jackie's character is a common man's character, he is a petty goon, chhota mota mawali who falls in love witha girl and his life is changed for ever. See 'Karma' ......the protagonist is a father, there is a lovely family and it is destroyed by Dr.Dang. The rest of the characters in the movie for example Naseer, Jackie and Anil were all lifted from day to day life characters.......people we may meet nad to this he added patriotism. A common man, a father .....takes revenge for his children. Of course there is lot of fantasy in the plot but thats what movie makers do...they sell fancy dreams, they take us for a ride, a joy ride and in a manner which is Ok for us, believable. Not out and out unbeleivable. See Ram-Lakhan, the boys and there mother are common people. The common thread I am talking about is that there are common people, they face extraordinary difficulties and rise above their limitations and become super-heroes. This is the winning formula. We all want to be like this. His movies, these stories inspire us. Another common thread is revenge. Every man has been wronged by rich, powerful and mighty. Each one of us wants to take revenge. And when we saw the heroes of Subhash Ghai movies take revenge successfully we liked it. We shared their pro

brothers.

The identity given by him to his characters stuck badly to his actors. He used Raakhi so effectively as amother, a widow wronged...who seeked revenge through her sons who will never fail her "doodh ka Karz'...
Raakhi was cast in exactky similar roles times innumerable by lot of notable people. Rakesh Roshan in Karan Arjun, Abbas Mustaan in Soldier..and they are highly successful movie makers themselves.
Another worthy example is Anil Kapoor..the character of Lakhan stuck to hi so much that he repeated the bhai type of act and the look so many times..successfully sometimes unsuccessfully...Rakhwaala, even the recent Majnu bhai in Welcome
Just like RK he had a tremendous sense of music and his movies always topped the charts. No one can deny this fact. The music of Karz is one of the best (popular) in Indian music industry and inspires music composers and movie makers even today. Remember "Dard e Dil" ..the eternal lover song sung by great Rafi......it was copied / parodied by SRK in Dard-e-Disco". Hero (1983) had such a wonderful music track that it will forever remain as one of the must have collections .....'Karma', RamLakhan. Saudagar, Khalnayak, Pardes, Taal..all of them have extremely successful music score ......these collections have a everlasting shelf life.

Hi Friends,

Since this is about Subhash Ghai, a man once called the new "Show Man" of Indian Moviedom; this is a prized tag, as it in times gone by, belonged to a great movie maker and story teller - the now legendary late Raj Kapoor, I could hardly resist to participate.
I am a self confessed admirer of old Subhash Ghai pattern of movie story telling. I have seen all his movies except Yaadein (2001), Kisna (2005).

Subhash Ghai actually looked like a worthy successor to Raj Kapoor in terms of masala movie making and did consistently dish out a wonderful fare for a long time since his first Kaalicharan (1976) to as recent as Taal (1999). He had tasted phenomenal success for most of his movies made it big, really big. He was almost a man with Midas touch.......His movies were declared witha loud bang, eagerly expected by junta and were received well. He like Raj Kapoor made hit movies time after time, and made them BIG made them with elan ...and people liked it.

His movies Mukta Arts like RK banner
had the biggest and the brightest stars....he even created a coup of sorts by bringing together the most pricey and difficult to handle Dilip Kumar and Rajkumar in one movie (Saudagar 1991). All big names, established and men of proven mettel liked to work with him. He had a tremendous sense of timing and knew the pulse of people, and always came up with trump cards at the right time Karma (1986) - The Patriotic Fervour returns, Ram Lakhan (1989) - the revenge of two b

Kisna.. like Karz!!
by rohit chauhan on Mar 06, 2008 02:16 PM  | Hide replies

Sir, I think u should gracefully accept that Kisna was a misadventure. Isha was a non-actor in the first place, and did rope dancing out of context.
Second, the chilman song was extremely badly shot, particularly the part where Vivek Oberoi is having fun with a rose and the king's ear.
Third, the movie's length was too demanding.
Probably, the only good part in the movie was the sceneries and art direction, though u changed ganga's color to some artificial green.
The gori girl was the only good actor along with amrish Puri, all others were a total waste. Even on the top of that, u showed the girl's hip-line for no reason, the reason becoz of which I asked my rishikesh based parents not to see the film. So that hip-line definitely costed u 2 viewers, and probably a lot more. Kisna is a disgrace of a movie, even worse than yaadein.. I write so much becoz i myself wasted money in the cinema hall for this movie.

Rohit, I completely agree with you.

Thinking it was a Subhash Ghai movie with music from ARR, I too went to the theater on the second day!!! I was totally disappointed.

You totally wasted: Hum hai is pal kahan and reduced it to a background song. Even ARR was upset about it.

The only reason I sat through the entire movie was I had wasted 240 on tickets (my wife and I) another 50 on snacks 10 bucks for parking.

It was pathetic, disgraceful, disrespectful and I felt like throwing up on couple of occasions.

What Grandfather's values he's barking? Oh! you now expect to watch this and go through the same emotions another 5-years down the line?

Forget it Mr.Ghai!!
