Oscar cowardice or smart?
by saagar on Mar 08, 2006 09:25 AM

Excuse me Mr. Raja Sen? Homosexuality, despite your claims, is still not a very welcome topic in the US and the rest of the world. Under this regime, especially, homosexual marraiges almost got banned under the constitution. The Oscars have to get their ratings back. Let the subject be more welcome by the mainstream American audience first, the Oscars will inevitibly follow.

Choice of Reviewer

Dear Rediff People,

This is my ask to you guys - Please do NOT allow Raja Sen to write any more reviews for Rediff.

The man can put anyone away from the screen.

Thank you.

Myopic and Agenda Driven

Are you saying that Brokeback Mountain should have won the oscar because of the subject matter (Homesexuality) ????. Now that is a whole load of bull crap. It is perfectly fair for anyone to have the opinion they have about what the best movie is. But to suggest that the Academy had to pick Brokeback mountain because one had to trumpet the "Homemosexual cause" is ridiculous at best and defaets the whole purpose of the award. I for one actually thought Crash deserved the award dues to good acting. Not that Brlokeback Mountain was abad movie.

Cheers.

subjective
by M. Hafner on Mar 08, 2006 05:04 AM

The author's choices are subjective, like the Academy's. Statistically they are far less significant though. :-) To each his own. Oscar does not please me all the time as well, but why should he/it?
Why "American Beauty" should not win but "Chocolat" should is a mistery to me. It's good some things remain mysteries. Otherwise the world would become boring.

Your articles on the Oscar driven by cowardice and contradiction?
by Priya on Mar 08, 2006 03:55 AM

Here are a few quotes from your article last year:

\"...No go, and the lack of surprise continued to rule the evening.\"

\"Best Original Screenplay has, over the last few years, emerged as the most respectable Oscar category, where the Academy actually seems to not be dumbing down towards the box-office. Which means really interesting writing really gets to win\"

\" Lets just start calling this category the Best Picture Free Of Massive Studio Lobbying, and cork open the budget champagne.\"

Guess who won Best original screenplay this year? And Crash winning the BP Oscar was the big surprise of the of the night shaking things up, and making things not so predictible..something you wanted! The movie itself was awesome, thoroughly deserving, but thats upto personal opinion.

What i don\'t get is why you can never be happy. I can picture it now..if BBM had won.. \"Oscars just a mirror to other awards. There used to be a time when the Oscars would differ, not anymore...\"

OK. Who Are You?
by Karthik on Mar 08, 2006 03:23 AM

Mr. Sen,

I would like to introduce myself as a DP (Director of Photography) for independent films out of LA. I have also worked on a few mainstream studio flicks from this country. Who are you? and why do you constantly get confused between "What I feel" and "What is Right"? (Assuming there is some such thing as the 'right way to do it' in film critiquing or for that matter, any art critiquing)

Worthless article

Why does rediff waste its resources on such articles? Raja Sen adds nothing to the proceedings. Rediff Entertainment editors, you need to re-look Mr.Sen's appointment !

is crash a safe choise?
by praveen on Mar 08, 2006 01:19 AM

Raja,
Racial tensions have been and still is a more controversial topic here in US than "Gay acceptance". That, oscars chose "crash" shows that the award committee has been brave enough to throw out the overwhelming favorite, and actually have taken a risky step.
Your write up "may be" is due to your lack of understanding of the importance of racial issues in US.
