Talking of gravitational pull...
by Rajesh Shetty on Jul 21, 2009 07:12 PM  | Hide replies

This is just a hypothetical question to readers here...Man has been carrying out missions to the moon since 1969. Suppose in every mission he leaves behind something on the moon, maybe say a few tons of debris or earth matter, deliberately, is it possible that due to increase in the mass of the moon ( after say a few thousand such missions ), moon's gravity would increase and that of earth decrease, and any change take place in the orbit of the same ?

It is a very good question. Moon is not exactly revolving around earth. Both are revolving around a point, which is very near to the CG of the earth, This is because earth is much heavier than moon. Now say in one billion billion moon mission the earth mass reduces to what today is moon mass and moon mass increases to today's earth mass. The point in question will shift towards moon CG. And earth will start revolving around moon.
But the fact is, age of earth and moon is just 6 billion years.
In this process of mass transfer a stage will come when both the masses is same. At that time both will revolve around an imaginary poing in space between the two. This phenomenon can be seen between two almost equally big stars close to each other.

Gavitation is relative (and hence it is constant - like equilibrium). In your hopethetical question, you mentioned the increased mass of moon but there is an equivalent decrese of mass on earth. Hence the gavitational force will remain a constant (hypethecally as gravitational calculations are empirical and there can be no 'lab test' to prove it, neither there is an apparatus to prototype such thing) or thats what the pundits say. May be and if Aristotle , who once famously claimed 'if you show be a place to stand, I can pull the earth' (or some such) could have provided an answer is alive today. :)

thnx...i guess than we will have to move mass from Mars to moon to upset the equilibrium of gravity that exists b/w moon and earth..:)

Pregnant women take care
by Aasim on Jul 21, 2009 06:20 PM  | Hide replies

I am myself a what u call a victim of Solar Eclipse of 1980. My ears you see are not developed as they shd have been and the reason is simple of the eclipse my mother didn't took care of, so all those who are pregnant do stay indoors and take care, as science has to do research and unless u become a patient, they have nothing to do research on, so don't be a Ginny Pig for the Scientists.

the perception is that during an eclipse, using any sharp object can cause a cleft lip(Hare lip) to the unborn child. In my Cleft clinic,I have approx 450 patients registered for corrective treatment. There is no evidence to prove that these children had abnormility due to a passing eclipse overhead. For your info, the facial structures are formed in the first and second month of pregnancy, often when the mother is not even aware that she is pregnant. Therefore these unfortunate anomolies are already present when such events happen.

Problem is, if a pregnant woman does not remain indoors she will give birth to a defective child like our AASIM, but if a woman who is not pregnant remains indoors she MAY become pregnant!

I had this experience of see an eclipse two decades ago from my room when there was that wonderful" ring "formation . I had initially seen it with naked eyes , then used xray films to view it . I am colourblind. No one in my family is one . There is a great chance that I may be so because of this careless unprotected viewing. so better be careful.

the size of moon is too small for earth to feel any change in gravitational pull by Sun.

The gravitational pull does not need line of sight. It does not get blocked .So the gravitational pull of sun (only) as experienced on earth will remain same.

The weight that goes to Moon is very small, it will not disturb that, We will also bring back minerals and rocks to earth, it will be a balancing act then, Also outer space meteors and other things also fall on earth on a regular basis. Another question that arises is that when you are sending tons of satellites to the space that also reduces earth's weight. but in due time these satellites expire and fall back to earth.
