Mis-conception on Eclipse
by ramachandra mahale on Jul 21, 2009 10:03 PM

I don't understand why so much hue and cry is being raised on eclipse and its adverse effects on Hindus. I thought people had become wise enough to be sure that it is natural phenomenon. It is regrettable and pitiable to find that they are carried away by the so called astrologers who are content in brain-washing with the sole intention of minting money. Even the renowned astrologer like K N Rao has repeatedly advised against the so called astrologers' predictions. Even Baba Ramdev (I am not his disciple)categorically denied as to the much feared predictions of the astrologers. In the age of advanced science and literacy such fears are unwarranted. It makes laughing stock as to how the eclipse would affect the people of Hindu religion whereas people from other religions are un-affected. Rediff.com should come forward by publishing thought provoking articles in this regard and remove the fears. In the circumstances so called discussion in preceding comments is a futile exercise and waste of time. I am ready to face comments and abuses on my comments. My conviction is firm.

Bertrand Russell said "never being *completely certain* is one of the hallmarks of rationality"

Good science, western OR indian, understands that there is no such thing in science (or pretty much anything else) that is absulutely, super-duper hyper-mega ultra certain. There is always some doubt. Good scientists, wherever they are from, try to estimate and state honestly the chance that their predictions are wrong.

Only charlatans claim absolute certainty. And they keep on doing so, even when they are proved to be wrong, because people like you don't understand that anyone can use words, like WILL or MAY or BANANA or whatever, and that in itself doesn't decide whether they in fact understand nature or not.

For example, you call yourself CHATUR, but it is clear to anyone who reads your scientific views that in them there is no chaturta.

To all the doomsday predictors and dhongi babas
by righty rightwinger on Jul 21, 2009 09:19 PM  | Hide replies

Please go to bed and don't wake up till 8 AM. You people believe in nonsense and predict rubbish. Let normal people enjoy the eclipse either by watching it with proper protective eyegear or better yet on TV as this is the last total solar eclipse of our generation(next one will happen after more than 100 years, maybe rediff will come up with another 10 ridiculous designs by then!). All the dhongi babas can worry over what will happen in the world, in their dreams.

Idiot you know nothing. Don't abuse others. Every thing in Hinduism is symbolic in nature when the asked people not to have food during solar eclipse or asked people to stay in door what they are trying to do is to communicate the dangers in the form of fear when literacy is the lowest in India. Don't think that you evolved to a higher intellectual state in the last 1000 years. Don't show your foolishness with your arrogance.

are you mentally deranged??? An eclipse is a natural phenomenon that happens for a reason. It's not some divine event. What good will fasting do during an eclipse??? People like you should be sent to Porkistan for your rotten intellect.

Don't be so sure about natural phenomenon. There is a difference between knowledge and stupidity masked with arrogance. The fasting was suggested as food items are subjected to radiation. They asked pregnat women not to venture out because the foetus (which is in genetic form) is susceptible to intense radiation. They suggest you to meditate during that period because the planets affect your mind. 'Lunatics' are people who are exxposed to Lunar radiation and deranged lunar eclipse and they get these highs during full moon days and no-moon days. Hindu life is centered on Celestial mathematics. Your grand father and his grand father respected it. Over a period of time some of them might have been misintrepreted. Don't confirm your idiocy by saying things which you have meagre comprehension of. You show your kundali to Jyothishi or look for Shubh muhurat for your marraige and when it comes to things you can not understand, you call them superstitions. Grow up.

Western science is 150 years old at best. What they say science today was elementary in ancient oriental knowledge.

"Western science is 150 years old at best. What they say science today was elementary in ancient oriental knowledge."

You should take these ancient knowledges of yours to TIFR or to Bhabha institute etc...maybe they'll solve string theory and get nuclear power this way :)

No one is interested in your string theorties and BARCs. So enjoy your joy ride. What I meant however was, you have a belief system. Just because you have one, do not denounce others by saying your's is superior. It does not matter if you say you know string theory and nuclear power generation, you will remain a jerk. A jerk who does not have commonsense and basics.

My "belief system" is that attitudes, beliefs, opinions and fact claims can be discussed, debated, criticized and defended openly and freely. And you can "denounce" this by calling me a jerk how?

Except that on the whole radiation from the sun is LESS intense during an eclipse than at any other time. Now the sun is incredibly bright and hot and even the little light that you see during a partial eclipse can hurt your eyes. Another issue is that because the light is relatively dim your pupils don't contract as much and the residual light, (and UV rays etc) enter your retina more. So they recommend taking precautions, and not acting like there is no risk.

But this stuff about genetic effects to the foetus, "lunar radiation" (the moon does not radiate at all...it only reflects solar radiation), fasting (by the way, it have you ever heard of irradiated food?) is just illogical.

At the expense of repetition here is it : No I am not expert at irradiation and food affected by radiation etc. neither am I interested in knowing. What I am interested in however do not call some thing superstition because you have no comprehension of what it is or have nothing to do with it. No one is forcing you to fast or be pregnant and roam around. So , leave decisions to people.

By the way what is your pressumption based on that moon does not emit radiated energy ? Text books ? I read them too. So save your knowledge till tomorrow.

"neither am I interested in knowing."

Then you should keep away when people make claims based on reasons and arguments. What's the point of just saying whatever you feel like, then insisting that you don't care whether what you say is true or not, but that no-one should call it wrong or superstitious?

"So , leave decisions to people. "

I'm not taking anyone's decisions away. I can also call their decisions good or bad, sensible or strange, clever or foolish.

"By the way what is your pressumption based on that moon does not emit radiated energy"

Umm...you do know the moon's made of rock like the earth right? People have even walked on it...you should look it up. It's fascinating.

The only thing that we need to be aware is that the sunlight will diminish for sometime. It also happens when it rains heavily. So what is the big deal. We are told not to look at the Sun as if we keep staring at the Sun otherwise.

I do not understand why we are making such a hue and cry about something that just does not matter and has no impact on our normal life
