Indians means no money!!!
by Kay on Jan 05, 2008 06:34 AM  | Hide replies

That was very nice article and I too have faced this in Goa and across the Globe in Indian owned restaurants in US.

Actually the problem is that in our culture no one pays tips in restaurants(but things are changing). In abroad the tips by norm is 20% of total value of transaction. Now in Goa the hotel staff used to such hefty tips, conveniently ignore Indians as there is little incentive in serving them.

Also in beaches, skimpily clad people easily attract attention of Indians, as we are not used to exposing our bodies in public. So often these people feel akward and complain to locals, but there is no excuse for the local folks to ask people to vacate the chairs unless they own those chairs.

And in Night clubs I think there are enough bad instances when the number of single men outnumber the women. Best example is in Mumbai where acouple of women got assaulted. Is is unfair to let single Foriegner men to be allowed inside, I think that should not be allowed. However remember again the tips that can be made from these guys tilts the scale in their favor.

White Indian

I think I have the unique opportunity to present the 'firang' version of the story. By a strange fate of luck, I am white-skinned and green eyed, usually mistaken for a foreigner if I keep my mouth shut, or absolve of all instances of my hindi phonetic roots.

Yes, I do get good service and more than a fair share fawning desis, but there is a flip side to it.

You are expected to pay more, everywhere, from tips to the waiters, to being fleeced by the cabbies, to the porters and touts everywhere.

Oh, holy reverse discrimination batman! In Mysore, my fine dusky Dravidan cousins refused to allow me to enter palaces and touristy places, lest I agree to pay the foreigners fare (10x what Indian citizens pay). A fairly intelligible smattering of Hindi refused to convince them of my Indianness, I was asked to pay up or show some ID.

What was ironic was a few Indian Americans in our group, of questionable origin, with dollars flashing in their wallets and American accents that can drive a Yank up the yankee doodle doo, were welcomed and asked to pay the Indian fare.

Goa is a mixed bag. White skin means precious moolah during the peak season.

Sidin, look at the bright (light?) side, Svetlana wouldn't offer massages to the whities.

imagine my dismay when my colleague happened to see this and immediately asked the patient to come over and finished his treatment when others were sttill waiting their turn..and as indians are meek as lambs..not one patient protested at this differential treatment.
Lastly, after a few years in academics i happen to have a few scientific publications..yet i always try to get them published in any western journal because i have seen that only a western tag tends to get acknowledge by my peers and superiors..now am i being rascist or what???
if this is what doctors think and behave like..what to say of the layman??its natural for such prejudices to be deeply embedded in our psyche...
regarding politeness, i have been fortunate to have had excellent teachers and parents who made it sure that i would be as polite as possible. however when i see the boorish behaviour that is so prevelant in india now, i shudder and wonder if i have been taught the wrong skills? politeness is taken as weakness in india..i have seen that when i am polite to my junior staff..they think its becos i am young and am not confident!!what an attitude!!a rough brashful behaviour from my colleagues gets the work done!!who is to blame for this weird thinking that we indians seem to be developing..i really fear for our country seeing the kind of culture that is being encouraged by our uncouth movies(that we proudly call BOLLYWOOD-the ultimate xmpl of our complex), politicians and serials.luk fwd 2 resp

hye what happened this new year in mumbai can happen anywhere in the world. It has happened upteem no of times in country like US. That has nothing to do the above write up. The whole concept of us still catering to foreigners is because they are better tippers than indians so you see similar situations in five star hotels

mr ashish i see you boasting abt goras every where,in how many foreign country's did you stay.dont think people who get into the flight are only people in foreign country if so why would be crime rate in those country's so high and why cant a woman or man go out walking after 10 or 11pm or sometimes any lonely places at any time .in india its lot more safe than US or many other countrys.there are not only frustrated people in foreign country's but also all kind of weird people..so get your facts right DUDE before commenting so badly abt indians DUDE...and i think you know only about india as you stay there not about other country's as you heard about them.

my experiences-2
by krishnan on Jan 04, 2008 12:45 AM

i was now a postgrad dental student in pondicherry. once a white man happened to come to our OPD for treatment. the scene was hilarious. our interns fought tooth and nail to treat this firangi..taking utmost care and giving so much love which wud have put his mother to shame..it was disgusting to see this servile behaviour from indians..these same drs used to boss over the poor indian who used to come to the college for some treatment..i felt very humiliated at the way we indians behaved...what is it that makes u crawl when we see a firang?it was ridiculous to see guys who always used to speak in tamil suddenly start speaking loudly in english so that they can catch the attention of gora sahib!!i know of a dental student who spent just 1 year in UK and now talks with such an accent that even the Queen would be impressed!!why do we act so silly? yet we never tire( as i see in this blog) to keep on harping as to how great we were..we indians love to dwell in the past..talk about being blind to reality..we indians fit the bill!!
the last incident again saw me once examining a firang patient at pondy..i then asked him to please wait his turn..and he sits beside m..on a chair reserved for the staff..i politely asked him to please take a seat in the area reserved for the patients..u shud have seen his face..he was appallled...me????sit with locals?? are u nuts?? fortunately i was quite firm and said that all patients were the same and he must wait his turn in the designated area..

hi!! one of the most interesting discussions i have read for a while at rediff.I would like to share a few expreriences of mine..some of which potray my own unique way of racial profiling!! though i am ashamed of a few, i still believe i may be right in some of these incidents..after all truth is indeed bitter..and we indians hate bitter stuff!! i will try tp divide the incidents into parts if space is unavailable.firstly i am a dentist and my experiences are mostly related to my field. As u know, like in other specialities, dentistry and its progress is indebted to the research and hard work put by the westerners and i always used to wonder as a BDS student why indians are seen nowhere?? when i was an intern(in one of India's highly reputed college) i once happened to treat a NRI student for someminor problem on his rootcanal treated teeth. When i saw the filling(which was badly done), i asked him where it was done and he said USA.i was surprised to see such poor work from a developed country(please note that i had not seen any decent dental scientific contribution from an Indian during my studies)...but then i just asked him who the dentist was..and he said it was an indian!! i laughed aloud saying..no wonder..this has India written all over it..unfortunately this incident of poor work just reinforced my belief(false??) that the white man was better than us..next incident in the next post..i look forward to responses..am sure abuses about poor self esteem are likely..goahea

Differences
by I on Jan 03, 2008 05:28 PM  | Hide replies

Scene 1: Landing at Delhi airport, at immigration, we are asked lots of questions...like we are trying to sneak in our own country unlawfully! For god's sake, you look like indian, speak like indian, have a genuine indian passport...what else?

Scene 1: In some european countries, somebody with Indian passport will be checked throughly and suspiciously. Even though you show them appropriate visa and boarding pass. People with EU coloured passport pass with flying colours...Even they can be fake...can't the?).

As far as restaurents are concerned, I guess its all about our love and affection (Greed actually) for money which westerners can throw more than we indians.

Delhi might be full of RASCALS. No one had asked me any questions coming through other airports....

In European countries Indias sneak in under false passport and overstay thier visa.. How do you expect to be treated if half of the people coming to thier country are frauds...

Indians in these countries should join together and report to the authorities about these frauds and throw out these frauds who come to a country, throw away thier passports and try to get free food, health care...

Then you will be treated differently...

We are slaves ..
by YATENDRA KUMAR on Jan 03, 2008 05:06 PM  | Hide replies

Not only in the restaurants, I have witnessed the same behavoiur even at our Passport Controls while returning from abroad. The foreigners ( particularly the white skinned ) are treated very differently than the native Indians. Our own people are asked number of questions while the fair skinned people are cleared very quickly. On the other hand when we land in the countries of our guests, the Indians are made to wait for much longer.
We are slaves .. are not we ?

YES... THE INCIDENTS OF CRIME FROM INDIANS COMING BACK TO THE COUNTRY WITH NARCOTICS, ILLEGAL THINGS INCLUDING GUNS, BLACK MONEY, LIQUOR ETC. ARE 1000 TIMES MORE....

HENCE THEY ASK QUESTIONS... INDIANS ABROAD SHOULD JOIN FORCES AND FIGHT THESE CRIMINALS.
ONCE THEY ARE CLEANED UP INDIANS WILL BE TREATED BETTER EVERYWHERE...

MOST OF THE MONEY FOR FIVE STAR RESTRAURANTS AND BARS AND HOTELS COME FROM INDIANS.. NOW PERSON WITH ANY SENSE WILL DISALLOW INDIANS IN THIS COUNTRY OR ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD..

AS A PERSON WHO TRAVELLED ALL CONTINENSTS EXCEPT ANTARTICA AND WHO HAD VISITED ALMOST ALL LARGE CITIES IN THE WORLD...

THE RACISM IS A WORD USED BY WEAK AND STUPID... IF YOU BELEIVE YOURSELF AS A LESS FORM OF HUMANS EVERYONE ELSE WILL TREAT YOU THE SAME WAY...

FEAR OF UNKOWN PEOPLE EXIST IN EVERY CIVINZATION.. BUT THAT IS A PART OF LIFE... AS S.INDIAN BRAHMIN LIKE ME GOING TO NAGALAND INTERIOR OR BIHAR INTERIOR WILL FACE THE SAME LOOKS AS I GO TO SUBSAHARAN AFRICA OR UPCOUNTRY NORWAY...

Indians and Dogs should not be allowed
by Sam Mohan on Jan 03, 2008 04:41 PM  | Hide replies

Indians are definilty illcultured ,Savage and misbehaved like dogs .But one thing they are loyal. They some times boast about their self proclamed superpower staus .and .Most of the time about their kids even if those are good for nothing. They always give molarily lessons to others and wishes to hug every girls that passes by since it is no possible they just stare stare and stare. They bosst that Indians respaect thir parents .But once married they try 1001 ways to get rid of parents So you can find love only ways parents loving thir kid not in the reverse direction.
They hate West, western culture but not western products .They always like to work for an MNC and get a scolarship in US and can see long queues in front of US/UK embassies even in early morning.

LOLZ THIS IS BEST EXAMPLE THAT INDIANS CRITICIZE INDIANS, COMMON DUDES AT LEAST KEEP RESPECT FOR OWN COUNTRY MEN.DON'T TAKE OUR OWN COUNTRY AND PEOPLE FOR GRANTED AND IF U CANT DEFEND UR OWN COUNTRY AT LEAST DON'T OFFEND.The things mentioned above are true for every culture thats different story many of u don't know other cultures, finding loopholes is easy but u ever tried to find out y many so called western culture called people turning up to Indian culture, let me tell you those people also know loopholes BUT ASK UR SELF whr u wont find loopholes. The article is true example of our changing frame of mind which gonna take us no whr but may be this time we lose our faith and freedom for our own country men!!!!
