now u tellin us author? we are indians......if u eat in indian stlye by sitting on floor with crossed legs...u sit straight automatically and stomach fills faster ...digests better..cheers to our culture
Sir, You seem to follow your diet very strictly. But you do not seem to eat rotis. For diabetis patients, atleast 1 meal should be roti or dhaliya (chamba rava) instead of rice. And where is your vegetable intake. Increase your vegetable intake and reduce your rice intake. It helps you to bring down you weight from 70 KG. Climbing stairs is good but do not over-do.. Regards,
hi, the article by Rohini Cardoso e Diniz on diet habits is very timely and thought-provoking. However, i wish the author had included something about tea and coffee, and also the number of times its ok to consume the beverage in a single working day.
I appreciate the overall aim of the article, but the line quoting "Limit the consumption of banana, mango, chickoo and grapes" is misleading to the public..on one side the author is saying to eat fruits, on another side says to limit these items, as such, I have not read anywhere any experts saying like this....!
One main message to be sent to the public is " eat more unrefined sugars (in the fruits) rather than refined sugar (available in ready made items)".

Dear Mr. Pattabhi, I am not dietician or a doctor. I work on plain common sense. I am sixty weighing 59/60kgs and an asthmatic too. With diabetis + hupertension, you need to change your food formula. At the outset, weight of 70 kgs looks to be on the high side. Other comments. The first drink in the empty stomach need not be coffee. I am a south indian too; but I take black tea, with or without sugar. Rice with Sambar ++ idlis etc sounds heavy. Some substitution with Chappatis would be ideal/recommended. Corn flakes with limited milk and apple is fine but adding Banana looks heavy. Replace Banana with Oranges which has more fibre, juicy , less sweet, and keeps bowel clean. Why not alternate with bread sandwich with tomatoes, cucumbers, celery etc. What about Salads, I dont find them in your diet. Salads consisting of Tomatoes, cucumber, onion pieces, lettuce, boiled beet root with a dash of lemon etc makes a filling and wonderful salad. An onion a day keeps the heart attack away said late Baburao Patel, the journalist and Homeo doctor. Onion keeps the blood thin. Rasam with not too much tamarin ,can be had like a delicious Indian soup to drink. Why add rice to it. Just suggestion
i am a pure vegetarian.i have undergone bypass surgery in 2000.i am having type II diabetis and hypertension; all under self controlMy daily diet is as fallows:- 5.30 am- 200 ml coffee 7.00 am- 200ml of( sugar free ) horlicks 9.00 am 50 gms of Kellogs cornflakes(plain)with milk and an apple with a banana(hill variety) 12.30 pm- 200 gms of cookked rice/250 gms of vegetable curry-150 ml of rasam or sambar-150 ml of buttermilk 2.30 pm- 250 ml of coffee with bakery biscuits 2 or 3 7.00 pm -150 gms of cookked rice or 4 idlies with buttermilk 9.00 pm- 200 ml of milk i am having regular walking in the evening apart from climbing stairs several times a day Kindly let me know whether i am on the right path not to put on wt in excess of present 70 kgs

Hi pattabiraman,
You are following the timings very good. Keep the same way.
However, Please make these diet changes since you are a Type II diabetec. These suggestions are based on my own experience.
1. Stop taking cooked rice. Rice converts to sugar very fast and your sugar levels go up instantly. Therefore, Eat same amount of cooked Cracked Wheat or 1 Chappati(made of pure wheat flour only).
2. Instead of Kellogs cornflakes, try to find Wheat cereals or Oat cereals. Corn also converts to sugar quickly. Wheat and Oat convert slowly and have very good fiber in them.
3. Fruits: Apples, Grapes and Bananas are sugary fruits and not suitable for Diabetecs (but good for normal people). But, Apple skin is very healthy. Also, Oranges and Guava have less sugar. Eat them.
4. Vegetables and Nuts: You can eat all vegetables (except Potato) without any limit. Carrot, Cabbage, Beans, Bhendi, Eggplant, all Green vegetables, eat them a lot. Also, eat some Nuts daily : Groundnut, Almond, Pista, Walnut or Cashew. They have very good protein.
