Many comments deal with not being able to participate in the Workshop as they (the commenters)are not in Bombay, and request correspondence courses (or that the Workshop be conducted in other cities). Here are some: www.Sulekha.com, www.Buzzle.com, www.Caferatti.com, www.Ryze.com, http://www.thundersandwich.com, http://www.sunoasis.com, http://r.webring.com/hub?ring=allansbestcreati, http://www.absolutewrite.com/site/staff.htm, http://www.momayapress.com/resources.htm, http://www.electricpenguin.com/inkspot/clippings.html, http://www.journal-writing.webdjinni.net/journal-writing-links/writing-resources.html,
The fourth tip that Lalwani quotes in the Tips for Aspiring Writers is: iv. Be honest. The most important quality one must have to be a good writer, says Balakrishnan, is honesty. And in the first comment on the article Pankaj Jaju copies from Rediffs article on Technical Writing without quoting his source, leading to the next comment by Suvarna. He attempts to undo the damage by giving the source in the next comment, but the damage has already been done. And Suvarna makes another grammatical gaff: The entire content of your message save two sentences is directly lifted from our article about Technical Writing on Rediff. What is it? Technical Writing on Rediff. OR our article on Rediff . Does she even understand the difference?
Actually the sentence should read: The entire content of your message, save two sentences, HAS BEEN directly lifted from our article on Rediff about Technical Writing.
I find this (Writing as a Career by Raj Lalwani Nov 02, 2005) interesting from varied points of view.
In the article, Renu Balakrishnan is stated to believe that anyone can become a good writer.
Such uncritical trashy statements make me go Gah, as a brief perusal of the hundreds of (writing) sites on the Net will reveal. They all offer a chance for the budding creative writer to find expression and feedback.
The reality is that creative writing needs to be channelled, first through correct expression (grammar, syntax, etc.) only then flowing into creativity. Else you have plenty of so called creative writing but not even the basics correct. Take, for example, Lalwanis statement, towards the end, The workshop will comprise of eight sessions of two hours each. Comprise does not take of except in the passive. Thus, The workshop is comprised of eight sessions of two hours each. And, The workshop will be comprised of eight sessions of two hours each. Much writing in toadys papers, on the Net and in some magazines has such needless grammatical errors.
I am living in the town where no such opportunities are available. So are there chances of taking some course through correspondence from the univ.s dealing in PG Diplomas.
Following the intimation,I wish to have Ms.Balakrishnan's email id. But cetainly, the workshop seems interesting. Its unfortunate that i may not be able to attend it.
