This is in reference with the above article.
Here i would like to add that since broadband the next thing ,one can think of removing modem from laptop to reduce further weight and complications
For broadband and wireless connection, one just needs a LAN card.. so another saving there!!!

Very vaguely written article. No proper guidlines mentioned. No disctintions made.
If you are talking about a P4 or a centrino, why dont you mention as to which processor is suitable for respective category of proffesionals.
Doesnt look like you decided the structure of this technical help document before embarking to write it.
The speed, size, weight and wifi options are decided based on this categorization. For eg. for someone who is in the design field, he would need more power, since he/she would be showing design based presentations which need more computation power.Bigger display, more ram, cdr and dvd writer (to give presentation copies to clients, also it makes sense to have all this inbuilt since too many external things one tends to lose or forget somewhere.
On the other end for a lawyer it would be more suitable to have some thing lighter, celeron processor, less power would do,cd writer, more battery life, smaller display, portable scanner (would need to scan docs on the move)(wifi), portable printer (print docs on the move) (wireless adapted,so can function without wires,no hassles. Blue tooth adaptor for laptop, scanner and printer.Complete off on the move.

The article clearly shows that its been written by a technically unsound person, a pretty viable option called the AMD Sempron and the AMD Turion have been totally left out... leaving me gaping at the article. The AMD Sempron delivers better performance than the Celeron-M and at a lot lower price (I remember see'ing an ad from Acer almost 3mnths ago for a Sempron laptop for 29,000, almost 3,000 rupees cheaper than a Celeron-M laptop. Then comes the turion, which again i remember seeing an ad from Fujitsu in some magazine for 43,000 while a comparable Centrino laptop was at 49,000. Well instead of driving people up a single alley called Intel, it would do a lot better to make people aware of all the options that are available in the market today. I'm a die hard AMD fan, and use a Sempron laptop (The acer one) and its been running amazingly well with a damn good battery life. I would say anyone aiming for an entry level laptop should go for the Acer Sempron laptop instead of the horribly underpowered and bulky Celeron. As for the turion... *sigh* wish i had the money to afford it.

Hi,

You seem to have good knowledge on lappies.

My sis is a student of architect, she want a laptop to work on softwares like, autocad, adobe photoshop, 3d max, basically design ones.

I have read that this type of software consumes lots of power. Please suggest if

1. AMD will go, as it will be economical.
2. Brand Name, I have Acer one and am satisfied.

Regards,

Shruti

Useless and Biased Article

This is a perfect example of stinky journalisn that evolves with journalists who write without a penny of research on the subject.

Could somebody answer:
Why only a Intell-Microsoft based laptop is a good laptop ?
Why MAC or Linus based laptops with AMD or other processors can not be a good option (although they are used as student laptops all over the world and are much economical) ?

Above all what is the qualification of the person who wrote this article that might be read by thousands of Rediff readers and may be considered as a serious advice when in fact it is so superficial, subjective and phony.

looks like you are intel agents

what about amd ? true that intel chips are good. but amd offers equally good solutions. you could have phrased it as the "buy best cpu that you can go for". it sounds too much much of a sellout for intel.

For those who run memory intensive applications and programs, the most important consideration is a high Level2 Cache Memory, preferably 2MB or at least 1MB.
