not only in ODI also in test matches that his avg is more than 50 plus, other then that his record is now 16 hundred in just 98 matches and 22 hundreds in test also. only the problem is his age that will keep him back. i can say he is a silent broadman. see in future.
there are few in line with him.... and few ahead in terms of matches played...if he is able to play 200 games (which looks not possible as SA plays less ODI) and maintain same average than for sure he should be rated as No 1....
Amla is in no way as threatening as Richards , Tendulkar , Lara or Kohli , he is a great player .. however a true great ODI batsman has to be rated based on multiple counts . Ability to win matches from hopeless situations is one of them .... No one could match Richards or Gilchrist in that count . Tendulkar and Kohli are masters in knocking out the opposition ,not letting them into the match at all .. Amla neither insitll fears in the oppotisiton like Inzamam , De Villers , Greenidge ... Amla is stylish like Mark Waugh , he is also lucky that he has DeVillers , Duminy and DuPlesis who can take away pressure of fast scoring away from him .. Averages does not give you the right impact made by a player ...
It is not understandable to ask that Amla is best ODI Batsman who just played 98 matches. I think that Dhoni is best ODI batsman having more than 60% average. Nobody can achieve near to Sachin
